That's the thing though...he never really gave me any indication that he liked what I gave him O.O so I was always confused.Controlling? O.O Hooooold on a second...we're talking about saying 'thank you.' Since when is it hard to say that? o.o I didn't expect him to throw flowers at me in appreciation or something crazy like that...I just wanted a simple thankyou so I would know that he liked his gift/s. Saying it won't kill you o.o
I never pressured him to say thank you...all I'm saying is that it's an easy thing to say, yet people still don't say it.

Manner are important. I think if show what kind of person you are.. How you were raises. Maybe Am wrong. But that how I real. I teach my boy's to always say please and thank you, excuse me etc. I can not stand rude people. I do not want me kid's to be like that.
Excuse me and sorry I think hav an exception because if you bump into someone and don't apoligise, it shows that you feel like it was their fault, or something (saying it when it's not your fault however is just dumb). Saying excuse me during a meeting or dinner depends on who you're with.

Teaching your children manners should be the least of your concerns....

Just because if you say 'please' or 'thanks' and don't mean it, doesn't make them meaningless words.

Thank you is a shortened version of "I give my gratitude to you".
Please is a shortened version of "If it pleases you" I. E. "If you would like to".
The fact that people don't know this, or mean this when they say it, makes the words meaningless. It's like saying the lords prayer in Primary School, or the scout's law. You don't understand or mean it, you just feel like it's something to do because they tell you to do it.

You are not taking into account that plenty of people DO mean it when they are being polite, though.

So when you say Please you literally mean "Only do it if you want to"?
For the most part, yes. If I ask someone "could you please do something for me" I mean it as "if you have time to or are able to, could you do me that favor?" Not just "oh, do that for me, and I'll toss on please to make it sound polite."

What in the Holy ****ing Hell are you talking about?
You say 'please' as a display of graciousness when making a request. Whether or not you 'mean it' is actually irrelevant, as it is the gesture that counts.
What other meanings than the one you outlined do you envisage?

And if it wasn't for the Romans, the UK and pretty much everything else we know wouldn't be around. What's your point?

Britain invented the H bomb, many famous people who lived in America were born in Britain, we were the ones who supplied the slaves and many more.
You're government has always piggy-backed ours, in-fact, we're your only ally.

"If you can, bring that to me."
"Give me that please."
Which is more polite? Please is not polite, formal speaking is, but saying please is just meaningless and annoying.

You are not very good with words, are you?
You can't give them your own definitions, they already have definitions, and the state of mind you are polite in is of no matter to something being polite or not...

It is politeness. If you say 'pass the salt please, you ****', then it isn't a polite sentence. That is a stupid point that nobody sensible is making, though.

I am serious, though not in saying that, because that is just some bullshit that you made up. It doesn't make 'people do what you want', though if you make the effort of saying it, you are making a movement towards politeness. Quite simple. It's a word that indicates politeness. Whether or not people comply is irrelevant to politeness.

It's not meaningless, it means please. You aren't properly distinguishing between the lack of sincerity in the gesture, and the meaning of the gesture.
