I'm always curious of creationists responce, but they never reply. Maybe they realise they're wrong, I don't know.

Either that, or they realize that they can't really back thier stance up...it's difficult to pawn pure logic with mythological wisdom.

Street preachers in general are creepy, no matter what they happen to be peddling.

Bruce makes one claim that I've heard before and never really understood. It's along the lines of "by not believing in Zeus you're an atheist even though you believe in Odin". This always strikes me as absurd, the person is clearly a theist due to their belief in Odin.

I've used variants of that sometimes as refutations of Pascal's Wager.

every time i see some douche in public screaming and voicing his religion this is what i am reminded of:

(5)”And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. (6)But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (7)And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. (8)Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. – Matthew 6.5-8 NASB

Cool bump. Funny video. I'll try to contribute at some point.

Cool quote.

Didn't Jesus despise religion and all its leaders for he saw them as corrupt opportunist making a profit of poor and desperate?
I remember reading something along the lines of that. It also said something like, other sects and religious groups in Jerusalem hated Jesus and his preachings because they saw him as far too liberal.

Religious nuts hating on a liberal from year 1.

And now for my two cents, which will hopefully springboard some new discussion. Different points are bulleted:

- Most of the arguments I encounter against atheism make certain false assumptions about the beliefs and positions of the atheist. The most common attacks on either religion or atheism are most true for the extremes: either the "angry youtube atheists" or fundamental/evangelical religious extremists. The attacks hold less water for "moderates" in either camp.

- The biggest one I've encountered personally is that people think atheism is the statement "there is no God" instead of "I don't believe there is a God." For any kind of rational discussion to occur, both sides must admit there's an article of faith involved in the beliefs of either side.

- In response to the (admittedly old) opening post, yes there's a lot of similarities between theistic and atheistic debate. There's only so many modes of debate available to us in religion, so the positions and attacks directed at the other side will no doubt possess parallels. I would, however, disagree that there's a mutual obliviousness involved in this process. It's inevitable, not ironic and cause for calls of a metaphoric armistice between the two sides. Similar debate tactics aside, the worldviews and approaches to life of theists compared to atheists ARE wildly different. There's only so far the similarities can go. Lil's opening post also illustrates my earlier point: it's true for the extremes but not for the majority. it only attacks the worst in religious deabte. As far as that goes, I agree with her, but not to the point of making general statements about either side.

- After having been on both sides of the fence, and gone out of my way to look into every defense of theism I can find, I remain convinced that the reasoning behind atheism and against theism is both more logical and likely and also healthier for us as individuals and a species. I understand the need for religion in people, and the common futility of railing against it. So I don't begrudge religion or those who are religious, so long as they use their religion as a tool for good. My personal moral philosophy is simple: Promote the happiness and freedom of all, insofar as it does not impede the freedoms and happiness of others. I have found that it works nicely for me, while removing the need for exact laws and deities to govern them.

makes it cooler that those words are said to come directly from Emmanuel aka.. Jesus Christ.. aka.. the anointed one, other known alias: God is with us. A direct quote from the bible...

and you are right Emmanuel disliked those religious hypocrites and well here is what he said:

John 2:13-16"The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!"

i cant stand Evangelist and church leaders my problem with religion is the corruption and those who are truly believers don't say a single world to those in power.

how hard is it to call them on their hypocrisy and decadence in their robes at church.. i would love to see just once on tv in front of camera an old woman or man stand up and tell those opportunist a@@holes you are not doing the will of god and should be ashamed for swindling money from the poor and putting it in their pockets and giant churches, private jets... and world banks like the Vatican and their treasury...

No.

He despised the hypocritical religious leaders. I'm not sure where you read he hated all religions and all its leaders.
