Visual Storytelling at it's finest....

Themes, scenes, or shots repeated or mirrored throughout the saga

This is hopefully the start of what will become a great thread.

First, I checked around and found only the foreshadowing thread, but none like this one.

Second, yes I'm copying this thread from TF.N, one because I liked it so much over there, and two because here it can be condensed into a few pages rather than 90.

So what exactly is it for?

Screencaps, specifically those images or shots and sequences that show the visual themes that Lucas weaved throughout the six films.

Many are obvious (Both skywalkers losing an arm), some are not.
Some are opposites, some are the same situations.

In any event, I'll try to make this fun, and definately want others to look, comment, and participate as this type of thread I've seen on 3 different boards ends up bringing lots of great discussions.

Without further ado:

Anakin's first journey is one of innocence, one that leads to his freedom.
Anakin's second journey is one of darkness, one that leads to the end of his innocene. Note the symbolic sun setting on him.

Exactly the same shot. Obi-wan is always towered over by those closest to him.

Twice Anakin says goodbye to his mother, and twice it changes his life.

The last good days of the republic are ending. The darkness is spreading.

A flight into uncertainty:

Similar positions reversed:

Echoes of the Past:

A Master's Decision; A Jedi's Proclimation:

Note that these scenes are both when Anakin and Luke are officially decided to become Jedi. Both feature Obi-wan, but the angles are reversed. Anakin is on the left side of the screen, traditionaly the villian's side, and Luke on the right, the hero's side. This is intentional, and planned by Lucas, as you'll see in many more shots to come.

A Mentor Lost:

An interesting note here, so far there have been shots of Anakin's beginning story matching Luke's beginning story or
1=4
2=5
3=6

but there is also
1=6
2=5
3=4

/\
'---------A father lost.

and of course, the saga ends how it began:

(note again: Qui-Gon is on the right, Vader on the left.)

Nice summing up. Nothing new really, Lucas copying himself. But these are nice.

Loss of a loved one:

On approach:

Enter the Jedi:

Appearing before the big man:

Some of them are good, but some are mere contrivances of using the same place over and over again.

I much prefer the motifs of loosing hands, etc.

Meeting of the big-wigs:

And behind door number two:

More Garage Repairs:

No place like Homestead:

Alrighty, I'll try to get some of those (there are quite literally hundreds of them.) 😛

First film ends in celebration, but with intrigue ahead:

Anakin loses his mother, Luke loses his father:

Note Anakin's position on the left, Luke on the right.

Again, Shmi's on the right, Anakin on the left. Note the circular scar on the left cheek of both Shmi and un-masked Anakin.

For Alliance:

More for Alliance (the second shot, anyway):

Note: These shots are remaniscent of the film "Triumph of the Will" a Nazi propoganda that is reviled for it's message, but known for its images.

AOTC:

ESB:

Padme shoots at Dooku's ship as it leaves, while Leah fires at Boba Fett's escaping ship.

AOTC:

ESB:

The End.

Notice how the last shot in "Clones" appears to be an inverted version of a similar composition from the closing moments of "Empire"; also of note, besides the fact that the droids are present in both images, is that in "Clones" we have a shot of husband-wife, while in "Empire" we have brother-sister.

😂 Thanks.

Brother/Sister and almost husband wife. 😉

btw...why is Anakin's arm sparking?

Hey cool thread. 🙂

😂 yes it is.

Where is Sidious sitting and making questionable sounds while watching two men fight? lol

Must have been the heated material of bone and cloth and what-not that sparks.

Plus, very intereresting thread, I hadn't noticed most of these before.

Coming up on Mon., my good sir. But of course if you've got good screencaps, then post 'em!

I've got alot of these high-quality ones though, so even if nobody else posts, I'll be at this for awhile.

Thanks guys, I was hoping you'd get a kick out of these. 🙂

There are lots more to go, as that haXxor Lucas made sure that the PT took things from the OT and mirrored and flipped them.

Some later ones are going to be clever and un-expected, as I'll show you how Luke and Anakins story's and Leah and Padme's stories parralel and contrast, but also how Luke and padme's and Leah's and Anakin's do too.

Plus I'm saving a Mace/Han solo goodie for Mon., wonder if anybody could beat me to it? 😖hifty:

Great thread sithsaber, well done. I hadnt noticed many of these before - I see you have even found a couple with Count Dooku. Very good. 😛

Its nto being haxxor or unoriginal. Its making a coherent saga 😉

Yeah, well, there is an awful lot of repetition. He repeats just about everything, it does show a bit of poverty on ideas though. Taking out only the relevant themes to be copied would have made it stronger. This just shows he does everything the same way. Too much of this and it gets lame, it just kinda shows Lucas ran out of ideas.

Or perhaps it means that he weaved things into the saga more subtlely than we'd thought....

Anyways, let the goodness continue!

These two sets of shots show a direct parallel in themes and tones, with blue smoke and red/orange contrasts. Also the positions are the same.

Similarly, both characters are in the same place thematicaly, as a young Jedi padawan facing an older, more experienced Sith lord.

Whoop! I Think We Took a Wrong Turn:

Sidious Introduced:

The first time we see him in either trilogy he is a hologram, controlling the main plot while staying behind-the-scenes.

Here's two sets of shots from ESB and AOTC, that have the same themes and happen at the same point in time in each movie:

Flight Into Danger

Kiss Before Dying

Jedi Training:

The composition of these shots is somewhat different, but the thematic and visual reference is undeniable.
