Kenobi, Meet Skywalker
The shots are reversed, as are the stories of the characters. Once again, Anakin is on the left side of the shot (traditionally the villians) and Luke is on the right. (traditionally the hero's)
Just Kickin' It
Sorry for the quality of the first pic. Both duels orchastrated by Palpatine, both Skywalkers faced by the conflict of using anger.... These scenes definitely contrast each other.
Leaving Tatooine
Both times our group of heroes leave the desert planet in hopes of finding a democratic, peaceful planet that will help the situation.
Similarly, they both end up leaving places of corrupt control.
Vaders Mask
Nice symetry to these two scenes, when the mask is first lowered, and finally lifted.
Hanging Around
Just a visual parallel, but one of my faves.
Before The Council
The first shot is warm and welcoming, as Anakin stands among the Jedi Masters. The second is colder, with Anakin standing in defiance. Note again the symbolic sun setting, this time behind storm clouds.
Maternal Instincts
Sorry about the picture quality on that one.
I know that I did one with the council chamber already, but it's worth noting the look of these two shots is eerily similar. One is Anakin's first time in the council, trying to be a Jedi and the other is the last time he's in the chambers as a Jedi.
Cleaning Up
Here's one where Luke has the same path as Padme, and there are a few more that I'll get to.
This next group is just visual parallels:
Anybody who's heard the AOTC commentary knows that Bobba Fett catches Solo because of realizing the trick Kenobi played before.
So Uncivilized
Trying to Convince the Lady
Again, note Anakin's position (when in focus) he's most often on the left, the villians side.
I like how themes are expressed and then re-inforced, sometimes more than once. Both of these scenes can be tied into the end of ROTJ. (Obi-wan loses Qui-gon; Luke loses Vader and Anakin loses his mother, Luke loses his father.)
Out for a Spin
Anakin is always on the left, whereas Luke is on the right.
It's incredible how many themes/shots/motifs are repeated. I've yet to watch them all 1-6, but I wonder if it does anything on a subconcious level to watch it that way.
It seems Lucas tells the same story in each trilogy, but from literally a different angle.
For Queeq, to hang above the bar. 😛
And, as promised... the two BMF's in the whole StarWars galaxy:

Or perhaps it means that he weaved things into the saga more subtlely than we'd thought....
Hardly subtle... He just copies every shot OTHER directors made in the OT. It would have been subtle had he only done it with crucial Anakin-Luke parrallels. But he doubles or quadruples everything.
Most of them aren't even motifs... they are way to shallow for them to be called that. Like the harpoons-around-the-pole... Since when is that a motif? It's a copy!!! Bears no relevance at all!!!
I don't mind it that much, but don't call this visual storytelling at it's finest. the finest was invented in the OT and then copied 20 years later in three more films.

See, I don't see it that way.
Lucas indeed made masterpieces with the OT, but we are selling the PT short, I think.
He went back to tell the story of Luke's father Anakin, the story of Darth Vader, and the story of the Republic becoming the Empire.
The fact that he took the time to blend the stories, to make things either rhyme or contrast with each other, and especially if he noticed that Luke was shown on the right side of the screen, the hero's, maybe even "just because" since it was a hero's story, and took the chance to tell Anankin's on the opposite side, and in opposite or the same situations....
shows a subtlety and a genius, quite frankly.
These are subtle things, not even noticed until pointed out in some cases, while others are right in your face. (skywalkers lose arms)
They show to me that when Lucas went back to tell his PT, he took far more care in placing the images together in certain ways. Things progress visually within each film on its own, but they also progress visually into the next film. Even further, as one film may have a character or event that is subtley reversed from a similar choice or event in another one that is two or three films away.
It's poetry.
If it's accidental then it's lucky or just weird.
If it's intentional, it makes the whole saga that much better.
I have more pics coming Queeq, I'm glad you've liked these ones so far, but wait till you see what else is in the films.
You may change your mind about the PT, in some regards anyway.
(after all, no amount of poetry or pretty images replaces shit acting.) 😛

regardless, this is still one of the coolest threads ive seen, alot of these i was just blown back that i hadnt seen the parallels before, and the others i didnt realize were that similar.
Originally posted by AllianceIs it a stretch though?
😂 Some of those are a stretch...like ships flying away form Tatooine.
They both happen about an hour into the film, they both show a Skywalker taken from Tatooine, they both head off hoping to end up in a place that will help things (alderaan and coruscant) and they both end up leaving tech heavy places (coruscant being the "entire planet is one big city" always reminded me of the death star anyway) that are full of curruption and evil at the end.
Plus they had a desert planet behind them, so I figured: what the hell. 😛
