Visual Storytelling at it's finest....

The twin suns probably represent hope, and portray Luke as the light (perhaps).
The eclipse, I think, symbolises what is happening to Anakin's soul. (The light being blocked out).

I'd originally used this pic:

but I think these two are better:

At the end of TPM, Queen Amidala and Obi-Wan Kenobi stand between Palpidious and young Anakin Skywalker.

At the end of ROTS, no one (nowhere, no how) stands between Darth Sidious and Darth Vader. Complete. Pwnership.

Thats some damn good insight as well sithsaber

I love that last one with Vader and Sidious.

Notice in the comparison between "You are beaten" and "You have lost"?

The stupid points on the end of the lightsabers in ROTS!

What, did everybody get a lightsaber upgrade in the clone wars that make lightsabers pointy?

And does Anakins saber have a point on it in ROTS, but the same lightsaber not have one in ANH and TESB? 😂

I continue to say: a lot is mere reptition... The Padme-in-between-Sidious-and-Anakin is quite good.

I simply love this thread, it really is crazy seeing all the parellels in shot design and story that I didnt come anywhere near picking up on.

Yeah, I like how it ties up the theme from the first film. Very deliberate on 'ol GL's part, I'm sure. And yes Queeq, alot is repetition, you're right. 😛 Still, for me it makes the saga blend well as a whole.

I might update later today or tomorrow.

You can add the locking-in of the two speederbikes in ROTJ and the two podracers in TPM... Like falling in a pit, there are loads of such repititions. I'm sure he kinda shot the same way too.

Good one Queeq!

I'm sure I can find that.

I'll try to get an update in later today.

as I said: repetitions... not great visual storytelling. 😂

Indeed. Sometimes, like with those ending of TPM and ROTS profile shots, there is a visual progression or change, other times it's just repeated shots or situations.

Like:

Here's a theme carried out through one film, ESB.

At various times during the course of this film, Luke is hung upside down and stands on his hands. Each time, he demonstrates his growing skill with the Force-- telekenesis, spontaneous on Hoth and concentrated in Dagobah, premonitions on Dagobah and psychic connection under the bowels of Cloud City.

In shot one we have Anakin's surrogate father figure to his right as his supposed story of conception is being told, and is visualised ahead of him. The scene which really suckers Anakin into the Dark Side.

In shot two we have Anakin's actual son to his right as his supposed surrogate father is ahead of him. The scene which will set up the generational family conflict which will lead him back to the Light Side.

Here, Lucas creates a mirror between Luke and Maul by putting them in the same stance, camera angle and general physical space. Maul has knocked Obi-Wan down a pit, and stands at its edge, while Luke does the same. A principal difference, however, is that Maul's shot comes from the end of his duel, while Luke's comes closer to the beginning, and that Maul knocked Obi-Wan into a circular pit, while Luke knocked Vader out of a circular pit. In any case, they both wind up being dismembered and falling down a pit themselves.

Ouch.

Meh....thats a plot device...unless you think Lucas is making a firect comparison between Maul and Luke.

I think my occasional issue with this thread is that while you find repeated layouts and positions, they aren't really meaningful unless the characters in both positions actually speak to eachother.

No Lucas isn't making a direct comparison between Maul and Luke, but he says himself that he "takes certain situations and changes them, or repeats them with different characters, somtimes with the same result and sometimes with a different one." -TPM dvd commentary

That situation seemed like one of those, for the reasons posted.

In any event, it's a similar visual image. 😛

Yeah, Lucas is into that kind of repetition. He calls it a kind of poetry. He is right, but I think he overuses it and that kinda ruins the effect.

How about the similarity between Luke hanging
upside down in the snow cave, and Vader sitting
in his jaw-like chamber of solitude on the star
destroyer?

That was nice... but then, that was Kershner.

So?

Not Lucas. Lucas repeats a lot from Kershner and Marquand.

Movie-making is a collaborative process. Lucas had his hand in everything, it's hard to say a shot solely belongs to the director. How about the actor, the set designer, the cinematogapher, etc. etc.
