Oh, that expression basically means this:

Meaning: Someone who faults another for faults conspicuously his own.

Example: You think police should stop all those other terrible drivers? That's like the pot calling the kettle black!

Origin: This expression dates back to the 17th Century. In ancient times, pots as well as kettles would likely be blackened over the open cooking fires of the day.

Does that help? 😄

as in, Jack wants Elizabeth but its silly for Norrington to accuse him of it because Norrington wants her as well.

its important because Jack is actually admitting he wants Elizabeth to both Norrington and Will.

Question: If that line was so important to establish that Jack wants Elizabeth, then why do you think it was cut? Just wondering what you all make of that.

ummmmm......well t&t want w/l i think

probably didnt want to give too much away too soon.

generally however i go with the idea that the things that were cut were cut because they werent essential to the plot. everyone already was clued in that Jack was crushing on Elizabeth, from the beginning of the film. i mean, by this point he has proposed to her for goodness sakes. So that line was superfluous. not only that, but it made Will's reaction to the kiss that much more dramatic, because at that point Will wouldn't have any idea that Jack was after Elizabeth. built up the dramatic tension more, i guess.

Okay, I watched DMC for the second time last night (thanks to my brother for getting my a great present!) and I paid extra attention to the scene we were talking about earlier with Will and Liz while she's in the jail.
I agree with Kate, Liz seems very calm and sedate for being in prison facing hanging. But I think the solution to that is that she doesn't plan on staying long. I think she has an escape plan all set, and when Will tells her what's going on, I do think she has faith in him and Jack just like she says.
Will....oh Willl, you are the hardest to figure out. The "keep a weather eye out for the horizon" or whatever he says is weird because he edges the cage and whispers it. It's almost seductive and pretty hot for Will, but when Liz leans in, he leaves and she's left just staring after him. What's that about?

^ I always wondered why he didn't kiss her at that moment. I mean he's doesn't know how long he's going to be gone or even if he'll make it back and he doesn't even give her a goodbye kiss.

I guess T & T wanted to save the kiss for later on, for dramatic effect but they were already together at this point so that rule doesnt really apply. Maybe it was to increase Elizabeth's...frustration. I know, I'm answering my own question here. 🙂

No, it's okay. It's a valid question. He leans in, whispers, is almost seductive, Liz is reeled in, and then he leaves and she looks disappointed. Maybe he's just over-eager to get her out of there. That could be it. Maybe you're right. It's just strange.

I didn't actually think it was all that strange. It's obvious he wants to kiss her, and if you watch him a little more closely, he hesitates before pulling away. It's like he's torn.

I'm almost wondering if he didn't kiss her then because he was leaving it as an open promise. No kiss good-bye meant that he was coming back for her. It's just a thought, but it makes sense.

Also, I suspect that kissing through the bars would be a bit awkward, and um, if they get started, it might be even more difficult to pull away. I love that scene. I love the physical contact that they maintain throughout it, and the way they speak softly to each other, as if they are the only people in the world. 😄

mmhmmm yes that's true

Of course it's true. Have you ever tried to kiss anyone while they're behind bars? I haven't, but I've done it behind the banister on the stairs before, and let me tell you, it's a bit difficult to you know, get really involved in it. 😄

I think you were onto something more with the idea of Will not wanting to make it a goodbye kiss rather than get so turned on he insists on doing it between the bars. I'm not saying he's not turned on by "if it weren't for these bars, I'd have you already." Any man would be. But I think you're closer with the promise he'll come back.

ELizabeth said, "Ill wait for you"

But she didn't, exactly, she decided to go HELP him to find Jack.

Her dad kind of put her in that position, though. He made her escape and was going to take her to England. She also thought when she said that to Will that it was legitimate, but she put it together that Will was being used. She's really protective of him and he told her where he was going to go, so I would have done the same thing.

If someone who you love is in danger you would go and help that person, not just sit there and wait.

I guess Liz felt that she's responsible over Will. Ever since she rescued him when they were little, she felt as though she should watch over him.

^ When Gov. Swann breaks her out of Jack and sends her packing, I always thought she went along with it a little too easily. Yes, she protested a bit but ultimately, she was wiling to leave Port Royal and Will behind, wasn't she? I just thought that was interesting.

She's willing to leave Port Royal behind, but she did go to rescue Will. Like chiki said, she feels a need to protect him, which is what most of us would feel too. She didn't think Will would get back to Port Royal and she wouldn't be there. Her plan was to find him and she needed to get out of Port Royal and find Jack.

This is a gutsy plan, I think, looking for Jack instead of Will. Maybe she was looking for Will and just happened to find Jack first, but it's almost like she knew she would see Jack first. Who knows? Liz might have gone up to him and anything could have happened to Will. He might have died looking for him and Jack would honestly have no idea what she was talking about.

Well, Elizabeth did precisely what I would do at that point.

I dont think she was ever planning on getting on that ship with her dad. She lit out of the carriage the minute it stopped, IMO. She knew where she was going. She already had a plan.

So then she's free, she's got a pistol and her brains, but she's left her father behind and she's a fugitive. She's clever but she's not all-knowing: there's only so many ports she can chill out at safely without the EITC after her. She knows Will started at Tortuga and she knows she can handle getting there. IMO it wasn't so much about finding Jack or Will specifically, but about getting somewhere she would be safe and could regroup, find a crew or ship, and then strike out to look for Will again. She obviously didn't think Will would be successful in his mission or she would have stuck around Port Royal and waited for him in secret.

okay check the gate, i just had a different thought. Perhaps Elizabeth didn't like the idea of bringing Jack back and forcing him into service with the EITC. Maybe she wanted to get to Jack and Will before Will convinced Jack to come back to Port Royal.

I mean, Elizabeth would be the one who would understand Jack's idea of freedom best, after he opened his heart to her on the island. So maybe she's thinking she can obtain his compass, meet up with Will, but somehow manuevere things so Jack retains his freedom.

I get what you're saying, Kate my dear 😄

Excellent point there. She knows how important freedom means to Jack, after he opened up to her on the beach scene. She knows that freedom is all what he haves.

Maybe she was helping both Will and Jack. She is helping Will to get the compass to free them from death, and she is also helping Jack to keep his freedom.
