It means that they are setting up the opponents, then watching what happens to se what the outcome of the match up is. We saw the exact same thing happen nmerosu times with people like the Grandmaster over in Marvel. He did te exact same thing in JLA/Avengers with Krona. The matches are set up by the manipulators. the actual fight itself IS THE POINT OF THE WAGER between the two. they set the matches up and see who wins.

Actually, dumbf#ck, in the way it was actualy, shown, all they did was set the pieces agaisnt each, other, representing the match ups they had set. they then WAITED TO SE THE OUTCOME OF THE BATTLE, and the winner of the battle would beat the piece ofn the chess board.

The wager between joker and mxy was regarding wheteher or not Superman and Batman wuld win ON THEIR OWN. it was not dependant upon Mxy directly helping them. It was about Joker and Mxy setting up the matches and seeing what would happen in the fights, with nO outside influence on the outcome of the battles. In that was, it was a TEST to se whether or not they would win.
