But those mostly for the Trek fans to notice.

just got home from it today. my opinions:

overall : good movie, solid b

the good-

the art direction was amazing. from the hover craft to the forests to the animals everything was gorgeous. specifically i spent most of the movie salivating over the human technology. all very well done.

the bad-

obviously the plot. it was all very predictable and not put out very well imo. i was choking on the pro-environmental message that was being shoved down my throat every ten seconds. aside from that it was just predictable my friend and i spent the entire movie taking turns guessing what was going to happen next and how and we were right almost every time.

the ugly- it always irritates me to no end when i see people with guns lose to people without guns. that doesnt happen. ever. /shrug

also it always makes me laugh how in these stories some white man comes into a land of indigenous people and he can somehow adapt instantly to it do everything they can better than they can even though theyve been living their for a thousand years. reminds me of the old tarzan movie.

all around a good film though. if you can stand a movie that is nothing more than one giant cliche with sexy cgi thrown in then its awesome. if not... blegh.

I agree with all this. T2 and Aliens left me going "WOW! I GOT to see that AGAIN!" after seeing them in the theater. Avatar was a lot of hype, little substance. A 2 1/2 hour film that wasted a lot of its time dragging its feet. There was no sense of true store progression and you needed a LOT of suspension of disbelief when it came to how the characters acted.

I'm not unhappy with spending $11 for the 3D showing, but I won't be going again (unlike the multiple viewings of T2 or Aliens in the theater). It is a nice action flick near the end but there was no meat on the bones of the movie. I predict a good opening weekend and sharp drop off in earnings after that...I just don't see this as a blockbuster equaling T2 or Titanic's return on investment. To be honest, I seriously doubt it will pull in the $350-$400 million it cost to make.

What really irked me about the movie was how it was the typical portrayal of how Evil the "white man" is (granted, he meant to show how evil man is as a whole). Definitely gave you a feel of watching a sci-fi version of 'US Calvary vs. the Indians' type movie. I'm all for understanding, racial harmony, and protecting the environment...and I realize that the white man's history...hell human history in all... isn't that bright, but did Cameron have to shove it down our throats how evil humans are and how good nature is? Was this movie co-sponsored by Al Gore or something? Almost seemed like a live-action/adult version of "Ferngully".

It took him 15 years to write this movie? Should have gotten a few more writers to look it over and give it better dialog, characters, and a meatier plot. Almost wish he had done Battle Angel instead.

Overall, it is a fair movie but it's not a repeat watcher. If you DO decide to see it, go to a 3D showing. worth the upsale in ticket price

heh..my buddy fell asleep during most of the movie only to awake during the epic action sequences. Personally the action was nice(in 3-D) but I wasn't at all "blown" away by it. Which is actually pretty dissapointing considering that was the meat and bones of the whole movie.

not quite, It took him 15 years to create

He still he is.

Avatar:Biggest blockbuster!!!

The Avatar is just released and good to see James Cameron on the director's chair.I am wondering that his previous one was the monster Blockbuster with highest grossing in history. What you think will avatar break this record?

it is a good movie, but I do not think it will break any record

So much for this Avatar 3D not causing sickness and headaches... a lot I know who have seen it came out with headaches and some felt very sick... and they were fine during other 3D films like Up, and so on.

Don't think I will be able to see it at the cinema in 3D, shame really.

Because white-people are awesome. /end fact

thats interesting because the 3d in avatar was really weak. there wasnt anything that jumped out of the screen or anything except for the arrows for the most part.

i think its just watching an entire movie in 3d that hurts the brain.

No. It 's just sloppy writing. Non-Trek fans noticed, as well. (The smart ones.)

What plot holes?

It's happened several times throughout history. 4 battles of Bang Rachen being some off the top of my head.

I saw this last night.

I thought it was nice Cameron tried to pay homage to Native Americans, but this move had little story. Highly predictable as well. Way too cliché. Although the special effects were amazing, and the imagination of Pandora was too, the story and character development was...well meh.
I didn't hate it, I'm just very indifferent to it. That coupled with the headache 3D gave me, makes me want my $15 back.

Don't destroy one of the poor lass' pet peeves. It just seems...wrong. lulz

I enjoyed it. People at the theater were complaining about how un-original it was, but... what the hell is original these days? Very slim picks of original ideas, everything for the most part has been done. The cgi was great, and some parts where really cool.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking. Any movie with another species from another planet in it, can be automatically deemed "unoriginal."

Also, How to Avoid Getting a Headache in Avatar:

Read it, 3D movie watchers that get a headache.

your opinions smell flawed. rightfully yours to have, but flawed.

a movie being predictable doesnt necessarily make it a bad movie, but that is just me. 9/10 movies out there are predictable, so if that make them bad movies there are not many good ones. I next to never fail to predict who lives and dies when I speak up at the start of a movie.

I think the plot was well thought out and well put out. it felt fluent and natural and like a development that could happen should we ever face such an event in real life and the actions were repeated.

it is very flawed that you think men without guns lose to men with guns always. but in case you did not pay attention, which it seems you did not since you seem to have spent the entire duration of the movie looking for supposed flaws:

Spoiler:
the men without guns WERE LOSING! they were slaughtered, and I quote "hammered". walked over like they were nothing. when it came to the aerial battle, what did you expect to happen? those birds were the size of a damn aircraft of theirs and had the strength to throw them around like feathers. also, they even lost the air battle

as for Jake to come in there and kick ass, lets just remind you that he is first of all a trained marine and given the nature of the Na'vi, obviously more experienced in battle. the Na'vi was a highly peaceful people and simply having owned the body longer does not mean they are so much superior one who has three months of training inside it.

and lets not forget that when Jake was not in his avatar body, training for three months, he was outside it reading a detailed book about the Na'vi.

seems to me like you just want to find flaws in the movie and those few you find are farfetched and rather silly attempts to point out bad things in the movie.

then again, it is your opinion like how what above is mine.

You people are goddamn insane. Either that or you just like to shit on movies instead of having a good time. Please stop saying that it took Cameron fifteen years to make this movie. It isn't as though he has been in production on this film for fifteen years.

For those of you who were bored...,WOW, i'm sorry. You people must be playing to many video games or doing to many drugs. The action here was intense and beautiful. This however is not the main focus of the movie. Just like any other Cameron movie we are presented with a well developed back story and an introduction to characters. This movie takes it's time to tell the story. There seemed to be a well paced rhythm here. With visual and Audio ques we are told when to pay attention and when to enjoy the scenery.

Why are you nutbags so hung up with originality? The story is essentially dances with wolves in space with colonial marines...,whats wrong with that? lol It was an extremely fun ride. When is the last time you got the chance to experience a new world?

This movie did what the star wars prequels failed to do...,create a new world. I never felt as though i was watching a man in front of a blue screen or a giant puppet. I felt like a as watching something new. The movie felt new and that is the first time i have said that about anything in a very long time.
