i think it is a little too much to spend on the first movie of a potential franchise.. They prolly could have had the same desired cgi if they spent half of what they are going to

No. They are giving a budget comparable to what IRON MAN got, and I'm sure it's IRON MAN DC is thinking about. A hero nearly unknown outside the comic community becomes a smash hit, thanks partly to shrewd casting of Oscar-caliber actors. But can DC/Warner Bros. find someone - a name actor - who can capture imaginations like Robert Downey Jr. did?

perhaps, but whereas marvel struck gold with downey and iron man doesn't mean dc will. I feel that this first GL movie should be made a little cheap and with each possible sequel than increase the budget

I think the studio would always like to spend less. But look at what they need to do - not just a lot of flying sequences, but using CGI to create solid light constructs, plus scenes in outer space. Now maybe George Lucas could do this for $30 million less, because he's pretty conservative with his budgets, but he's got all his own facilities to work on a film.
The first X-Men cost $75 million back in 2000, and that didn't have all the complicated work this will need. Green Lantern can't be done well for under $100 million, at least.

they want big space battles. you can't do that well unless you spend properly. i agree with roughrider. dc sees this as their iron man. DC desperately needs to branch out, as they can't rely simply on their batman franchise.
they brought in Martin Campbell, who is no stranger to action sequences, and did a pretty damn good job with casino royale. it seems DC is bringing out the big guns. they have guggenheim on writing, and if they get a big actor, they could really pull it off.
fingers crossed, etc...

good points, but don't forget this also needs a good origin for hal as well as a kick ass story to tell

Well there is also a Jonah Hex movie coming
as they can't rely simply on their batman franchise
And also their Superman movies
they brought in Martin Campbell, who is no stranger to action sequences, and did a pretty damn good job with casino royale.
And Goldeneye.

he's not an A list character though... you can't really target as wide an audience as you would with GL or Bats...
And also their Superman movies
returns was a disaster financially and just in general. they aren't really relying on it imo...
And Goldeneye.
he did goldeneye too? well. thats more good news...
Can these IMDB rumours about Chris Pine be true?
He's just about to break out as the young James T. Kirk. Taking on Hal Jordan as well...
Can someone like that headline two franchises? 😐
As a rule it doesn't work out; though Christian Bale is attempting that right now with the new Terminator film.
Once upon a time, Harrison Ford jumped from Hal Solo to Indiana Jones; still...
If we could ignore the no-doing-two-comic-related-films rule (Re: the Halle Berry rule 😛 ) I would cast James Marsden as Hal. Not just because of X-Men, but also his work in Superman Returns.
But that's unlikely to happen.
They're shooting in Australia, so there will be local casting.
What about Guy Pearce as Sinestro?

Well; he looks like Hal.
Still carrying a grudge because Cyclops took a back seat to Logan?
not at all. marsden's performance was shit enough on its own.
and he looks like hal? any man thats six foot tall with wavy brown hair and a decent build looks like hal. its not exactly a unique look...
