Despite his circumstances, the responsibility for scholastic success lies with the individual. He must want to succeed despite the involvement of his parents and teachers.
yeah, that's why African kids score higher in tests then European kids....WRONG, if all it took was initiative, then a lot of desolate places would be parch with green land, it takes WORK on the part of structuring the environment AND the learner, but one with out the other is a minimal success.

diddnt bother to read many posts to this question ... it is only the teachers reasponsibility to teach the curriculum, nothing more and nothing less. A teacher who incoorperated their own spin on the subject and the teacher who identifies the childs learning dissability, is one who goes above the call of duty...
I sincerely hope and pray that you never, EVER become a teacher.

The person you were quoting seems to be making a mockery out of the responsibility toward teachers. This quote sums it up pretty well, when it comes to needing a "guide" to help us along until we are masterful at our craft..."He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master"
Hunter S. Thompson
The goal of teachers (all are quotes):
The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher strates.
The great teacher inspires.
William Arthur Ward
Everyone knows that the end result is the student's will, however, the teacher is the facilitator, and so are the parents.
Ask most women why they fail at math, it isn't because females are stupid or illogical, and now, the roles are reversed in math, WHY, because TEACHERS are facilitating the role and PAYING ATTENTION TO GIRLS, but at the same time, ignoring boys, so now, there are more girls doing well in math then boys. A lot of women told me when I was younger that they didn't have the same kind of encouragement in math or science. Don't tell me that teachers, tutors, and PARENTS don't have a lot of steering power.

As a teacher, I realise that most of the problems come from home........... that being the child, lack of discipline, parents that dont encourage studying, children who dont care about work, parents who also dont care bout work( yes I have met a few that say that their child already has a job lined up after school, so why stress!!)
I agree, I am a teacher as well and a lot of the responsibility lies with the parents to set up a good environment for the children that fosters learning and hard work. If they do not receive these ethics than how could they apply them?

That's pretty much my argument as well. 👆
One of my lecturers told me -
"If you set students / learners up for success, they will succeed.
If you set them up for failure, they will fail."
And I have seen this come true so many times... When we were observing at schools, we were told to follow a class around and see how they respond to different teachers - and the observation was painfully clear. In the classes where teachers hurled abuse at learners, and told them they were stupid and would never succeed, the class was totally unresponsive - and their grades sucked. In the classes where the teachers would proudly tell us (in front of the class) how bright the learners were, and how wonderful they were - the learners busted their asses to make sure they did not let her down.
oh some teachers are useless no doubt about that.
I say that it depends on the circumstances and the way the teenager is living, therefore simply its mainly the teens fault yes, but parents too in my opinion. Notice that the ones that love working were bought up like that. I love working sometimes, sometimes i hate it LOL

Black children do not score as well as white children on scholastic aptitude tests, because of the institutionalized bias in scholastic aptitude tests that favors white children.
By your reasoning, black children do not score as well as white children on scholastic aptitude tests, because the parents of black children are uninvolved. Nice generalization, racist.
The students, teachers and parents all count while determining what causes someone to fail. For instance, three years ago during my second year of Spanish my teacher made the lessons completely boring and yelled at us constantly which caused me to get a C in her class. The next quarter we got a new teacher and my grade shot up to an A+ (a 103 average to be exact)
Parents play a big role too... I know a lot of kids in my school whose parents don't even care about their childs grades. I was riding home one day last year with my (long lost) friend named Kevin.... during the ride back his mom mentions how he FAILED 6 SUBJECTS... including gym. Thats just pathetic, and she didn't even yell at him for it.
Of course some students just don't give a shit about their grades but I believe this is mostly because of the parents also in the long run. I mean think about the number of kids these days that do drugs and alcohol which cause them to completely ignore school. Well that never would have happened if it wasn't for the parents talking to them about drugs and what not. Just my opinion...
