Hmmm that's a tough one. I don't actually know. I agree with what others have said about Pirates of the Caribbean appealing to a wider audience and I mean have you seen the Pirates of the Caribbean forum on here? Not that that means it will do better. It's been a long time since Spiderman 2 came out and ever since the promotional photos for Spiderman 3 were released people have been getting really excited about it. Umm I think I'll choose Pirates of the Caribbean though, but it'll probably be a close one anyway.
Edit: Ooooo I made it 50:50!

Cosigned. They're the ones that have pretty much made POTC such a dominating force and they'll unfortunately continue the trend this year, making this new one the top movie of the year.
After all the fangirls are the ones that made Titanic the top movie of all time with their repeat viewings, and when you have a POTC sequel that once again features two guys they are completely in love with, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, and a girl whom they just love to be like, Keira Knightly, that's a huge recipe for success no matter how lousy the movie can be.
if pirates can beat atar wars. it will definently beat spiderman. It is a brilliant campaign that bruckhiemer and company has created for themselves. They stole the same tactic off of the wachowski brothers. Unfortunately spidey will run, but Pirates will fly. All the while Bruckhiemer gets paid, even when the sleeper hit explodes into shitdom Transformers.
From what I've seen, Dead Man's Chest took more $ than both Spiderman films in the US, the Black Pearl was beaten at the US box office by one of the Spierman films.
Saying that its the "Johnny Depp fangirls" that really sail the Pirates of the Carribbean box office ship is rather ignorant of the wider demographic it attracts, if still a semi-valid point ay heart.
POTC reaches an incredible number of people, more so than Spiderman. For instance, Pirates of the Carribbean has 3 leads, Depp, Knightly and Bloom. This attacts a heavy female following, as well as lending to an overall wider appeal.
Depp and Bloom are supposedly some of the best looking men in the industry(even if Bloom cannot act), which is another factor, while Keira Knightly is rather fine herself, so attracts attention yet again.
Back to the story, Spiderman is about a comic book character, and this, believe it or not comic book fans, however well made, does not mean it has universal appeal. Pirates of the Carribbean is a well made Hollywood action-adventure that is not limited in its source material. (unless you want to include the ride!) Pirates of the Carribbean is a family movie, I'm afraid this darker Spiderman film isn't.

Spiderman 3 will win. On the strength of the first two, both highly rated. POTC: DMC didn't do as well, both critically and financially. Spiderman has a larger mainstream following, in my opinion.
Ummm, I'm pretty sure DMC did VERY well, if I remember correctly (financially).
I think it broke a few records.
I honestly don't even know why some people are even thinking Spider-Man 3 will do better than Pirates 3.
Dead Man's Chest did SO well that to think Spidey will beat it's sequel is borderline crazy.
Look at how much the first Pirates film made - Worldwide: Worldwide: $653,913,918

Look how well Dead Man's Chest did - Worldwide: $1,065,659,812
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=piratesofthecaribbean2.htm
And compare that to Spider-Man - Worldwide: $821,708,551
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=spiderman.htm
And compare these to Spider-Man 2 - Worldwide: $783,766,341
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=spiderman2.htm
The sales of the Spider-Man films has decreased, whereas the sales for Pirates has nearly doubled.
Considering what a disappointment Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was said to be, a lot of people may not go to see the third installment.
Spider-Man 3 definitely has a lot of people anticipating it and neither of its movies thus far have let its audience down. At least not to my knowledge.
It's a possibility that Spider-Man 3 may come out on top. Just maybe.
anata wa wakarimasu ka.....
I have been doing some debating with friends about this question. Upon further review i think the flick could go either way, just because they are openning so close to each others release date. I really think that the type of people who are going to go see pirates are of the same breed that would want to see Spiderman. It will come down to which movie parents get dragged to by their children. After working at a Halloween store last year and seeing how we sold out of everything Pirates of the caribean with plenty of spiderman stock left over, i'm not sure. Kids love bright colors and fast moving action, with heros. Both movies have both.

Discussing which movie will make the most money is about as interesting - and relevant to the quality of each film - as what colour shoes most people will wear to the theatre.
You're what's irrelevant. Does the thread question ask which film will have better quality. No.
You don't rhyme. The topic of box office numbers and predictions is an absolutely entire subject by itself. If you want to discuss of the quality of each film go to a thread that discusses that topic or create your own thread on which is the better movie, quality or story-wise.
Either movie can still have the higher quality without outselling the other. Both Spidey films were super out-grossed by both "Pirates" movie, yet i think i liked the Spiderman movies way, way better.
