No. You don't know when the Bible is being symbolic or literal. Do your own research to find out what the sky is composed of.
so now you are telling me what i dont know presuming that you are aware of the knowledge in my mind.. hmmm......
it seems to me that whenever something is found to be contradictory in the bible with fact it becomes from a factual statement to a metaphorical one.. i wonder how long that firmament was believed to be a factual believe and was taken literal?
now on the slavery note again if they were the equivalent of employees, why then were they unlike other financially compensated individuals were they not allowed a chose to work or not?
they were treated as property to be sold or had with however they wished.. including sexual slavery.
Originally posted by JesusIsAlive"The word in the New Testament usually translated as “servant” actually means “slave,” and referred to someone who was owned or controlled by someone else, not just a servant hired to do a certain job. Some slaves performed menial household tasks. Others, called “stewards,” supervised the work of lesser servants or managed the master’s finances. In the time of Jesus, some people were slaves because they were born to slave parents. Others were captured in war and were forced to become slaves. Some people actually sold themselves as slaves because they could have a higher standard of life as a slave than if they had to keep struggling to find housing or food on their own.

Some slaves were better educated than their masters and served as teachers of their master’s children. Slaves of rich masters had all kinds of opportunities that they would never have had on their own. But slaves had no freedom, and their owners could do with them whatever they wanted, including selling them to someone else. After slaves became 30 years old, many would become “freedmen,” with duties to the former master and his family. Some slaves earned enough money to buy their own freedom, which would mean that their children could be free also."

Hmmm Sounds like there was slaves to me 😉

Were there Unions as well to make sure the slaves were getting slave-benefits?
What he means is that serfdom/indentured servitude is not the same as slavery. Serfs were able to get married and own property.
When most people hear "slavery" they think of the kind that happened in the United States. That's what you seem to be doing.

It wasn't chattel slavery fueled by racist psuedo-science.
Don't forget about the religious apologists too! Uncle Tom's Cabin implied that there was a religious rationale for slavery... I think. It's been a while since I read it. It might've been a passing mention anyway.

JIA is VAGUELY correct. Calling it "employment" is simply naive, However, slavery in the ancient world was much different then more modern forms of slavery in the New World. It still wasn't exactly friendly.

JIA is actually on the right track (for a change). Slavery in the Ancient World like Greece and Rome wasn't for life, it was closer to indentured servitude.
It wasn't like African slavery in the South where a baby was born a slave which was predetermined by their race, where they changed masters and names many times in their life, and were little more than dogs. In fact when archaeologists dug up Pompeii they found a crypt for a slave that had his name etched in it and a picture of him in mosaics. You think black slaves in America 200 years ago got that kind of respect when they died? So JIA has a point.
So some slaves were treated with some level of kindness in the ancient world (as were some Negro American slaves), like you would treat a cared for work horse. They're still slaves with no rights and at the will of their masters.
In Greece, the Helots were mostly laborers, toiled the fields, grew the food, did their masters bidding etc.
In Rome, slaves were like owned animals, some could buy their freedom, though the master had to agree I believe. Their masters could also sell, rape or kill them at will without fear of consequences.
Ergo, slave is still a slave, ie not a good position to be in.
edit: Leviticus 25:44-46 (King James Version)
44Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
45Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
46And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour. -end passage
"bondman/bondmaiden" = worker who recieves no wages
"be your possession" = you own them, like you own your shoes
"for ever" = they can't leave, ever
the bolded type clearly shows that JIA once again has no idea what he is talking about, even when it comes to the Bible.

Yes a slave is a slave, just like a car is a car and a pizza is a pizza. But there's different kinds and qualities.
The Ancient slaves had it way better than Africans in this country did by far. At Thermopylae 900 Helots died along side their masters in the famous last stand of the Spartans. They could've abandoned ship or slit their masters' throats when they were asleep but they didn't. I don't recall too many similar instances in American slavery. Blacks weren't even allowed to join the Confederate Army.

Not always, some slaves in the ancient world were assraped and then killed, just as some black slaves of America were treated with kindness, they weren't wiped, they were well feed and clothed, granted, they were still slaves. It's not black/white in the sense, ancient slave better/American slave worse.
Blacks did fight in the Confederate army, according to some historians. There's also pictures of "southern native guards", ie black soldiers in the Confederate army. Do a google.
Anyhow, I added to my post, Leviticus clearly shows that the slaves of the Israelites weren't like "employees", as JIA stated.
