No. I have a brain...and its on. Maybe its just me being 22 and not trusting you older folks. I've also elected Barack to office several times, so for me it was eventful but yet uneventful. Its different with race. Race is a topic on the forefront of American culture, especially the black civil rights movement for almost half a century. America has been there and there has been a consistent presence of black political leaders on the national scene. Women are (obviously) abundant enough to overcome any sexism and latinos have had a powerhouse movement in recent decades. Both these groups are highly active on the national political scene.
The same is not true for atheists, gays, and Muslims. Who can barely make it into congress, let alone the Senate. Sure they can be elected in niche local political environments, but not nationally (which is required to build up to the presidential level). These minorities are still used as labels to attack national politicians.
Surely as a Latino you've experienced discrimination. Its still out there, and some minorities don't have the numbers to claim the power as yours 🙂

The unwritten rule that along with being at least 35 and a natural born citizen, that a president has to be a white straight Christian male was obliterated on January 20th.
Atheists, gays and Muslims are groups that Obama has mentioned several times in his speeches. It won't be fifty years before one of those three runs or gets elected.

None have run with a major party.
Now, instead of being a white straight Christian male, you just have to be a straight Christian male. There seems to be a flaw with your theory, 2 in fact. Straight eliminates gays, and Christian eliminates atheists and Muslims. If you noticed in my statement, there is no breakdown by race or sex, which are two issues this country has dealt with long enough to overcome. The country is not ready to tolerate national, even statewide federal officials who differ in orientation or religion (excluding of course Jews who seem to get a free pass to the party). Gays don't even have equal rights yet, and you think they're gonna be president? I'm sorry, but your Obama-high has seemed to have taken you to an America we dont live in.
Also, fyi, the Constitutional age for a president is 40.

Obama-high? I didn't vote for him. Gays will be able to join the military openly under Obama. He paved the road for any type of person who wants to run. If in 1998 you said we would elect a black president in ten years, people would have rightfully dismissed you as a nut. But now to say it will be 50 years before we have a gay or Muslim president is ignorant.

Gays do not even have the same rights as blacks, when most of the Christan majority considers that gays are evil, has no morals, perverted or whatever what makes you think that they would want someone like that running for president? Also unless he really f's up he will be in the White House for 8 years, so that is only 42 years and last time I have checked there is not a dynamic gay politican that could stand in either party, hell most states will not even let them get married.

The floodgates have been opened...
Originally posted by Grand-Moff-GavReligion has always been a major deciding factor in how and who people vote for. How do you think that a gay can become president when they can't even get the same rights as a straight American in almost all the states, even in Democratic states? Hell there are still state constitutions on the books that ban Atheists from holding office or becoming even a boy scout. http://www.godlessgeeks.com/LINKS/StateConstitutions.htm
Hmm, the Christian still has a hold over US politics that's for sure..though I think the only people who care about religion as a factor for voting were all voting McCain this time...
The journal Political Psychology will often do studies about people's voting patterns.
Likeability is a stronger decider than ideology, and my assumption is that this would extend to religion.
Whether or not someone's religious beliefs match your own might be a reason for you to like them, thus making religion the reason you vote for them, but I think it could be manipulated (ie - vote for the nicer guy who isn't religious vs the idiot who is).
Obviously the cultural ideas about what religious and non-religious people stand for is going to be a huge component, but ya, in the debate between DP and GMG that I'm in no way involved in, I have to say that religiosity is not the most important, and it is the dislike that religion creates for gays and atheists that prevent them from attaining office.

To be fair to the average voter it's not as though high profile atheists do anything to make atheists seem likeable (just the opposite really). Gays have at least had people like Harvey Milk and such that have really made great strides in getting people to accept them as public figures.

debatable
I could do a docu-drama about any of the famous atheists today and make them look all happy and fun in their personal lives
I do accept your point though, and it is quite likely because atheists aren't fighting for basic freedoms and equality
