Ok, basically:
A while back, someone asked me about the green lantern corps. they wanted to get in to the comics, but didn't know where to start, given the rich and varied history of the comics. they wanted to be able to understand the universe better, and just get a general idea of the corps and its inhabitants and adventures. so off i went, looking on wiki and amazon and everywhere else, but nothing i found ever seemed to be substantial enough for someone to sit down and read without thumbing through dozens of articles.
what i did, then, was decide to write my own guide to the world and the history of the green lantern corps. i went through tons of comics, tons of websites, and even asked knowledgeable people on msn (val, steve, bada, trick etc) who were all good enough to help me out when i got stuck. even if it involved swearing at me. but that's another story.
anyways, over the next five or so posts, i'm going to present my guide to the green lantern corps.
feedback is welcome and encouraged. i want to be as accurate as possible.

The Guardians of the Universe
Billions of years ago, the planet Maltus gave birth to one of the first intelligent species in the universe. Originally resembling humans, but with grayish blue skin, this race of people devoted their lives to science, eager to understand the universe around them. One of these people, a Maltusian named Krona, performed a forbidden experiment in an attempt to see the origin of the universe. His meddling disrupted the formation of the cosmos itself, and the multiverse (many parallel universes) was created, as was the an anti-matter universe. Feeling responsible for this, the more evolved Maltusians relocated to a planet called Oa, which occupied the exact centre of the universe. Over time they evolved into their current appearance (that being about four feet tall, with white hair). Settled on the planet, the Guardians decided to combat evil, and try to bring order and peace to the universe.
The Manhunters
After The Guardians settled on Oa, they decided to create an interstellar police force. Their first attempt at such a thing was The Manhunters, robot warriors designed to bring Justice to wherever it was needed. While initially successful, the Manhunters' inability to feel emotion left them cold and rigid, more concerned with hunting down criminals rather than actually serving Justice. Soon, there was a glitch. Somehow, the Manhunters began to believe that the only way to maintain an orderly universe was to wipe out all life was eradicated. This led to the massacre of sector 666, of which only 5 people survived from a population of trillions. After that, the Guardians attempted to do away with the Manhunters, but were only partially successful, as the Manhunters were now in full revolt against their masters. Most of the Manhunters were destroyed, and what survivors there were pledged to one day destroy the Guardians.
The Green Lantern Corps
The Guardians were not swayed however, and decided to try again, creating a new police force, known as the Green Lantern Corps. They created a central power battery that would power the Green Lantern's power rings, using the combined willpower of the universe as a power source.
In an attempt to protect the weak and helpless of the universe, the Guardians hunted down and captured Parallax, a being that had existed since the dawn of time and was the embodiment of fear itself. They then trapped Parallax within the central power battery, hoping that it could be contained. This had the unusual side-effect of making all Green Lantern rings useless against anything that was coloured yellow (the colour of fear). When questioned about this, the Guardians insisted that it was a necessary impurity designed to stop Green Lanterns from becoming too powerful.
Oa
Oa is a plant located at the centre of the universe. It is the base of operations for the Green Lantern Corps, and is the current home of the Guardians of the Universe. It has been their home for thousands of years, even being destroyed and recreated at one point. When the Guardians arrived on Oa, they originally split the universe itself up into 3600 sectors that would be policed by the Guardians forces. Originally, each sector was patrolled by a single Green Lantern officer. Each of these sectors is shaped like a triangular wedge that points to Oa, so that even while a Green Lantern was on Oa, he was still in his own sector. Nowadays, since the rebuilding of the Corps, each sector now has two Lanterns protecting it...
Important Sectors
OA - Sector 0:
see above.
Qward - Sector -1:
The planet Qward lies at the centre of the anti-matter universe, and is in effect and 'Anti-Oa'. The anti-matter universe itself was created when a rogue scientist, named Krona (who was from the same planet as the guardians had originated from, a planet called Maltus) performed a forbidden experiment in an attempt to see the origin of the universe. His meddling disrupted the formation of the cosmos itself, and the multiverse (many parallel universes) was created, as was the an anti-matter universe.
This also caused the creation of a being called the Monitor (the living embodiment of positive matter, who was born on Oa's moon). It also gave birth to the Anti-Monitor, a twisted version of the positive, good natured monitor. This monster was born on Qward.
Earth - Sector 2814:
To the average member of the Green Lantern Corps, the planet of Earth is as backwater a planet as can exist in the Universe. The truth, however, is much different. Earth is regarded as the most emotionally diverse planet in the Universe, and is also the focal point of the Multiverse. If Earth were ever destroyed, existence itself may cease to exist.
Oa itself is in many ways a barren planet, appearing to be more desert than anything else. This is contrasted by the Guardian's city, which is the main base of the GLC. There are several features of the city itself:
The Meeting Hall is basically a briefing room where any meetings attended by large numbers of Lanterns will take place. There is also a training room for rookie Lantern's trying to hone their skills. A dining room takes care of the Lantern's culinary needs, its executive chef constantly trying to replicate foods from every sector. The Hall of Great Service contains the Book of Oa, which is a complete library of every piece of known information about the universe. The Sciencells serve as a prison, used to house the most dangerous beings in the universe. There is also a Memorial Hall, used to remember those brave Lanterns who have given their lives in service of the Corps. The largest, and some might say most important feature of the Guardian's City, is the Central Power Battery, which is the central source of power that the rings draw their power from...
TBC...
Green Lantern Power Rings
The Power Ring given to each Green Lantern officer is a psionically activated hard light generator. What this means is that the ring responds to the thoughts of the user, creating whatever shape the user is thinking of in the form of a large, translucent yet solid green object. The ring can create almost anything the user can conceive, from weapons to shields to equipment, and anything else the user might require. The ring also functions as a highly advanced medical and scientific scanner, and automatically translates any language the user might not understand (only seeming to have trouble with slang and swear-words).
The ring is limited only be the user's willpower and concentration. The more willpower the user has, the more powerful their constructs. By default, every ring casts a protective field around its user, which is sufficient to block most Earth weaponry. The ring also allows the user to fly, which is a requirement given how often they might travel to and from Oa.
The ring does have limitations, though. If the user cannot concentrate, the ring won't be able to maintain any constructs. Anything that disrupts the thought processes of the user will severely reduce the effectiveness of the ring. The ring itself has only a limited charge, and must be recharged regularly, though this is dependent on how much the ring is used and how often. It can be recharged through a power battery, one of which every Green Lantern is provided with. The power battery resembles a smaller version of the central power battery on Oa, and is linked directly to it, and thus never needs to be recharged.
The ring was built with a few safeguards, which includes the ability to prevent any attack which would kill the person the Green Lantern was fighting. If a Green Lantern tries to kill someone, the ring will divert the attack, or in some cases, even shut the ring down entirely. This only applies to organic life, as Green Lanterns have the ability to destroy manhunter robots or any other artificial life. The final, and most telling limitation, is that the ring, mostly for rookies, has no effect on anything coloured yellow. This was caused by the imprisonment of Parallax within the central power battery. Since the discovery of Parallax's existence by several members of the Corps, the ring can now be used against yellow by Lanterns who understand their own fears and can fully overcome them.
When a Green Lantern is killed, his ring automatically leaves him/her/it and seeks out a new user. This is made possible by the Green Lantern Mogo, a sentient planet who's core serves as the moral compass used by the rings when selecting a replacement Green Lantern.
The Emotional Spectrum
Since the beginning of sentient life, the emotional spectrum has existed. Every intelligent being in the universe feels emotions, and in its purest state, it can be harnessed as an energy source. The spectrum is divided up into seven colours: Red (Anger), Orange (Avarice/Greed), Yellow (Fear), Green (Willpower), Blue (Hope), Indigo (Compassion), and Violet (Love). When this emotional energy is channeled by a member of a corps, it allows them to fuel the use of their ring. For example, a Green Lantern would channel his or her own willpower into the ring, and this allows them to create the various constructs that the ring can create.
It is said that each emotion/colour is personified by one, singular being. Parallax is the pure embodiment of fear/terror, and takes on the appearance of a large, yellow parasite. The embodiment of willpower is Ion, and takes on the appearance of a large green whale. While Parallax can take over a sentient being, or even just influence its actions, the Ion entity is purely a supporting entity, and exercises no control over anyone it has merged with. It has not been revealed as to what beings personify the other emotions in the spectrum.
According to the Guardians, there will be seven corps (one for each colour). At some point in the future, all seven will be at war, some working together, some not. Some, such as the Indigo corps, will remain neutral. The Guardians have revealed that the further away from the centre of the spectrum the user goes (the centre being green), the more influence the power will have over the bearer.
OK.
this is the end of the fact stuff next is the history...
A brief history of the Green Lantern Corps...
Several years ago, the Green Lantern assigned to Sector 2814, known to his friends as Abin Sur, heard of a prophecy that spoke of the 'Blackest Night' when all life in the universe would be extinguished. It stated:
"After untold millennia, the enemies of the Green Lantern Corps will rise united against them.
The Corps shall be destroyed to the last life form. The planet Oa shall be as dust.
Among the gathered foeman shall be numbered the Weaponers of Qward, Ranx the Sentient City, and the unspeakable Children of the White Lobe.
The Empire of Tears, finally released from entombment, shall join the assault.
Sodam Yat, a Daxamite hailed as the ultimate Green Lantern will perish battling the lobe-spawn.
The planet-form Green Lantern Mogo will be the last to fall as Ranx explodes a blink-bomb within his core…"
He had heard about this on the planet Ysmault while he had been trying to help survivors of a crashed ship. Wanting to learn more, Abin traveled to Oa and consulted the book of Oa. Unsatisfied with his results, he returned to Ysmault. There, he hoped to learn more about this prophecy from the Five Inversions, leaders of a once grand, yet now defeated Empire. Supposedly, the Five Inversions had seen the future, and could give Sur some measure of assistance. It had been the Guardians of the Universe who had defeated their Empire of Tears, and had imprisoned the five leaders for eternity, banning all travel to and from the planet.
Finding out that the planet Earth was the source of the prophecy, he took one of the five, named Atrocitus, and attempted to use him to help Sur find 'The Black'. The Black was seen as the antithesis to the emotional spectrum, and would one day consume 'all light and all life'. On their way to Earth, Atrocitus manages to make Abin Sur feel fear, weakening the force-field Abin was using to hold his prisoner. Breaking free, Atrocitus forced the vessel they were traveling on to crash on Earth. Nearing death, Abin's ring sought out a replacement for him, and found Hal Jordan.
Jordan accepted the ring, and was brought to Oa for training by the Corps' resident drill sergeant, Kilowog. He immediately made an impression on all around him, showing his impressive willpower and his willingness to ask difficult questions, such as why the rings would not work on yellow. After graduating, Hal returned to Earth, only to be joined soon after by Sinestro, Abin Sur's protege and friend.
Sinestro was considered by many to be the greatest Green Lantern in the universe. His home planet (Korugar) was a part of the most orderly sector in the universe, sector 1417. Jordan brought Sinestro to Abin Sur's crash site, and replayed a message Abin had left for his former student. Together, they hunted down Atrocitus and took him into custody, but not before Jordan used his ring to destroy a large piece of machinery. A yellow piece of machinery. Being the only one who'd seen it happen, though, Jordan was brushed off by his fellow Lanterns whenever he tried to explain. Any further attempts at affecting yellow were unsuccessful, too. Regardless, Sinestro sensed a kindred spirit in Hal, and the two soon became very good friends.
That all changed, though, as a while later, Jordan travelled to Korugar with Sinestro. While there, Jordan saw that Sinestro had become a dictator to his people, and was abusing his role as Green Lantern. Calling in reinforcements, Jordan helped to take Sinestro into custody. Sinestro's punishment: He was banished to the Anti-Matter universe, specifically to Qward. The guardians hoped that, given the hatred the Qwardians had for the guardians and their lanterns, that the arrogant Sinestro would be humbled. This turned out to be a mistake, as Sinestro began to hate the Green Lantern Corps with all the ferocity that the Qwardians did. Becoming allies, the Qwardians fashioned a new, yellow ring for Sinestro, and helped him return to the positive matter universe so that he might gain vengeance.
After a while, the Guardians noticed that Hal seemed to be experiencing severe combat fatigue, and decided to pick a backup Green Lantern. Originally, they chose Guy Gardner. Gardner had originally been one of the choices for Abin Sur as successor, only to lose out to Hal Jordan simply because Hal was closer to Abin Sur's crash site. Unfortunately, though, Guy would soon be involved in an accident, and was unable to fulfill his duties as Green Lantern. So another backup was needed, and John Stewart was chosen. For a considerable time, all three men were called upon at one time or another to do the job of Green Lantern for Sector 2814.
Some time later, Sinestro met defeat at the hands of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and was imprisoned on Oa, in a vast prison built by the Guardians of the Universe (before they themselves took a leave of absence to mate with their female counterparts, the Zamarons). Unfortunately, the prison didn't last long enough, and Sinestro escaped, gaining untold power. Luckily, he was yet again defeated by the Green Lantern Corps, but this time, he was sentenced to death, and executed.
This in itself caused the decay of the central power battery. Many, many years before, the Guardians had solemnly sworn that no Korugan (Sinestro's people) would ever face capital punishment by the GLC, and to this end, they imbued the central power battery with the ability to resurrect any Korugan who suffered unjustly at the hands of the Green Lantern Corps. Because of this, Sinestro's very essence was alive and well within the central power battery, destabilising it and threatening the entire universe (it was said that if the central battery overloaded, it would form a black hole capable of drawing in the entire universe). With the threat of utter annihilation looming, Hal Jordan travelled into the central power battery, finding Sinestro within. Hal also came into contact with the being Parallax, yet didn't realise what it signified at the time. Parallax itself had been awakened by the presence of Sinestro's ring, and had infected Jordan without his knowledge. After defeating Sinestro and apparently condemning the Korugan to an eternity of imprisonment, Hal went back to his life as a Green Lantern. Unfortunately, his life was about to get a lot worse.
With Parallax subtly influencing him over the course of several years, Hal's self doubt was constantly increasing, and even his hair began to whiten, reflecting his ever worsening state.
TBC...
Things became infinitely worse when the insane Cyborg Hank Henshaw caused the destruction of Green Lantern's home town Coast City (pic). Recruiting Mongul to his cause, the Cyborg used Mongul and his technology to completely wipe Coast City from the Earth, leaving nothing but a crater (pic). His own rage at seeing his home wiped out, coupled with the Guardians' refusal to use the ring to bring Coast City back (at least in his eyes) allowed Parallax to cement its hold over the grieving Green Lantern, and Hal set out for Oa, wanting to gain enough power to reverse what Henshaw had done. The Guardians, however, were prepared, and sent their best and brightest to stop him. First, Hal faced Ke'haan and Laira (pic), yet for all their power, they soon fell to Jordan's willpower. Jordan took their rings from them, increasing his own power. Soon he ran into Tomar-Tu, and after a short battle, Jordan was victorious. He then beat Jack T. Chance, before taking his ring, bringing his total to four.
After defeating fellow Green Lanterns Kreon, Hannu (also spelt Honnu) and Graf Toren, Hal faced the warrior Boodikka, one of the most fearsome Green Lanterns. Even with her warrior spirit driving her, she was defeated, losing her hand in the process.
Their Lanterns having failed, the Guardians pulled a desperate move, creating a life like construct of Sinestro (that was in actual fact controlled from within the battery by the real Sinestro) and drawing it from the central power battery, hoping Hal's former friend could somehow halt his advance. He didn't, and Hal killed the facsimile of his former mentor... Hal thought he had finally won, only for his former instructor Kilowog (whom Hal had earlier defeated) to mount another attack, trying to desperately stop his friend. He, too, failed.
Victorious, and with nobody to stop him, Hal turned his attention to the Central Power Battery, wanting to harness all of its power. As Hal entered the battery, the guardians transferred the last of their power into one of their own, a guardian named Ganthet. With the battery completely absorbed, Hal became known as Parallax, not knowing entirely the name's true meaning. Hal's draining of the battery rendered every GL Ring in the universe powerless, dooming thousands of Lanterns to horrible deaths without their rings to protect them. Even then, though, all was not lost. Ganthet used the power given to him by his fellow Guardians, and created a new ring. A ring unencumbered by the limitations of the yellow impurity. This ring was given to Kyle Rayner, making him the only Green Lantern in existence.
For a time, Kyle was the torchbearer: The one and only Green Lantern. He had a ring that was untouched by the yellow impurity (as the Parallax being now resided within Hal jordan, it couldn't affect GL rings), and he soon became every bit Earth's protector as his predecessor had been. The Justice League of America soon acceptd Kyle in to their ranks, and he fought in several key battles, such as the attack by Mageddon, and he played an important role in battling Imperiex. Kyle had by now established himself as a worthy successor to Hal Jordan. Things, though, soon changed, when Parallax returned, giving his life to reignite Earth's dying sun, Hal Jordan's last attempt at redemption. Later, Hal, who had now bonded to the Spectre, was instrumental in recreating the planet Oa, restoring it to its former glory. Unfortunately, the Central Power Battery was powerless, meaning that the Green Lantern Corps was still, unfortunately, a corps of one.
Things stayed this way until Kyle, merging with the energy Hal had left within the sun, became Ion (pic), a being of immense, God-like power. Even though things at first seemed fine, Kyle soon began to realise that he didn't want this new found power. He decided, then, to use this power to reignite the Central Power Battery, resurrecting the fallen Guardians in the process. The Corps could now begin it's rebuilding process, though it met more often with failure than success. Two of those successes, though, were Kilowog (now resurrected), and John Stewart. Stewart even covered for Rayner (both in Lantern duties and with the Justice League) while the latter was in outer space helping Ganthet rebuild the Green Lantern Corps.
It was out in space that Rayner discovered something that shocked him to his core. He found out that Parallax was not simply a name that a power hungry Hal Jordan had taken, it was actually a sentient being that had existed since the dawn of sentience itself. Rayner also believed that Parallax had not in fact been killed when Hal Jordan had sacrificed himself, but instead had hidden within him when Jordan became the host of the Spectre. Fearing that Parallax had corruped the Spectre itself, Rayner was sent by Ganthet to retrieve Jordan's body from the sun. Down on Earth, stange things begin to happen. Coast City seems to almost spring up from thin air, but only one building is present; Hal Jordan's old apartment building.
Bringing the body to the Justice League watchtower, Rayner and Green Arrow were attacked by Sinestro, who revealed to them that it was he who had originally awoken Parallax. Soon after, Parallax manifested, gaining control over Jordan and the Spectre. After a brief battle with Earth's heroes, Hal finally began to fight back, and with the Spectre's help, removed Parallax from his soul, freeing the former Green Lantern of the monster's influence once and for all. Now free, Hal's soul returned to his body, and he was reborn. After defeating Sinestro, Hal and Kyle headed back to Earth.

seems to be a coding problem with this post, dunno why...
Joining up with Kilowog, Guy Gardner and John Stewart, the Lanterns turned their attention to Parallax, who had now infected Ganthet. After a brief battle (pic 1, pic 2, pic 3, pic 4, pic 5, pic 6, pic 7), the five Lanterns, using their rings as a conduit, imprisoned Parallax within the Central Power Battery once again, locking him away securely.
With Parallax now trapped once again, this had the side-effect of making Green Lantern rings initially useless against the colour yellow, as they had previously been for many years. The difference now, though, was that if a Lantern knew of Parallax, knew the true nature of fear, and could confront that part of themselves, they would be able to use their rings against the colour yellow.
Now, the Guardians could really press forward with their recruitment drive. They even brought in some veteran Lanterns to help train the many rookies that were being recruited. These included Kilowog, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner (John Stewart and Hal Jordan remained as the Guardians of Sector 2814). The new Corps was to be made up of 7200 Lanterns, twice what it once was, the Guardians deciding that each Lantern should have a sector partner to share in Green Lantern duties.
One of these rookies, Soranik Natu, went missing after electing to refuse admission to the GLC. Lanterns Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner picked up her ring's signal, and traced her to the Vega star system, a system off-limits to Green Lanterns. This was due to the Guardians having a pact with the Psions of Vega. Ignoring the ruling, Gardner and Rayner entered the system, finding and rescuing Natu. Meeting up with several other Lanterns, the group discovered that the Spider Guild were using subspace passages to drain stars of their energy and store it, leaving the resulting black holes to destroy whatever was in reach. The Lanterns also discover that Oa's sun is the next target, and they head back to warn their fellow corpsmen. On the way they receive a Code Zero alert, stating that Oa itself is under attack.
When they arrive, they find that Oa has been attacked by a massive Spider Guild army. The yellow robotic spiders prove to be more than a match for a lot of the rookies, who have not yet mastered the ability to overcome the yellow weakness. Guy Gardner rallies the troops, and the Lanterns concentrate their fire on Oa's unstable sun, planning to send the surplus energy back through the Spider Guild's subspace conduits and destroy their base of operations. They succeed, and Oa is saved. Wanting to protect the planet from further attacks, the Guardians build Oa a suit of armour.
For a short period of time, things were relatively peaceful for the Green Lantern Corps. Then, the Infinite Crisis happened. During this time, Kyle Rayner once again became Ion, the torchbearer of the Green Lantern Corps. Even though Oa itself was largely uninvolved, several Green Lanterns, including Mogo, were instrumental in stopping Superboy-Prime. The defeated Prime was placed in a cell on Oa, which consisted of a cell within a small red sun-eater, which in itself was surrounded at all times by no less than fifty Green Lantern officers.
Over a year later, things are going well for the Green Lantern Corps on Oa and the various sectors of the universe. Many of the rookies that had fought the Spider Guild are now fully fledged members of the Green Lantern Corps. Kilowog and Guy Gardner still serve on Oa. Coast City, home of Hal Jordan, is now almost fully rebuilt, but the memory of what had happened to the city previously keeps many away, leaving it resembling a ghost town. Hank Henshaw was found on the planet Manhunters home planet of Biot by Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Henshaw had assumed leadership of the Manhunters, using them as his own private army. Jordan and Gardner managed to defeat Henshaw and his armies with the help of several Green Lanterns that they had once thought deceased. These included the Lanterns Hal had fought on his way to Oa after Coast City was destroyed, and Arisia, a former lover of Hal's.
Slowly, rumours began to spread about something called "The Sinestro Corps". This was also around the same time that mysterious yellow power rings were sighted in various places. It was one such ring that drew the attention of Kyle Rayner, who managed to successfully trap one within a forcefield.
Rayner then travelled to Oa with his fellow corpsmen from 2814, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Soon after arriving on Oa, the yellow ring escaped, and transported Rayner to Qward, in the Anti-Matter universe. There, he discovered that Sinestro had been building a Corps of his own, their yellow rings powered by the ability to instill fear rather than willpower. Moments later, Oa itself was attacked by a large force of Sinestro Corps members. Although initially caught off guard, the Lanterns managed to turn the tables and repel the attackers. Unfortunately, they were unable to stop the Sinestro Corps from freeing Superboy-Prime, Hank Henshaw, and the Parallax entity. On Qward, after a short battle, Kyle Rayner was eventually subdued by the Sinestro Corps. Sinestro revealed to Kyle that the power of Ion that flowed within him was in fact an entity, just like Parallax. After removing the Ion entity from Kyle, Sinestro revealed that it was in fact he that was responsible for the death of Kyle's mother years before. He had infected her with a sentient virus, a member of the Sinestro Corps named Despotellis. With Kyle now powerless, and his will broken, he is unable to resist Parallax, who makes Kyle his new host. Sinestro then reveals that the Sinestro Corps has recruited Hank Henshaw, his army of Manhunters, and Superboy-Prime to their cause, all under the leadership of the Sinestro Corps' Guardian, The Anti-Monitor (pic). Not long after this, the Manhunters, back under the guidance of Hank Henshaw, build a new Warworld, which would transport the Central Power Battery of the Sinestro Corps, and provide a launching base for Henshaw's vast Manhunter army. Henshaw himself had only pledged his armies to the Anti-Monitor's service after the being had promised to give Henshaw what no-one else, not even Superman could not provide: Death.
TBC...
While attempting to go after and rescue Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan, john Stewart and Guy Gardner were caught out by a booby trap placed within the Central Power Battery, and were transported to Qward. There, seperated from his fellow Corpsmen, Jordan came face to face with a Parallax infected Kyle Rayner.
Throughout the Universe, Green Lantern officers were attacked and killed by members of the Sinestro Corps. This was mainly caused by two things. One, the swiftness of the Sinestro Corps' spread throughout the universe, which caught many Green Lantern officers off guard, and two, the fact that while Green Lantern rings were forbidden from killing sentient life forms, the Sinestro rings had no such limitations. The Sinestro Corps also had the benefit of newly refit Manhunter robots from Hank Henshaw's army. Once, the Manhunters had been fitted with Green Lantern batteries, allowing them to drain the rings of the Green Lanterns they were fighting. Now, though, they were outfitted with Yellow Power Batteries, and were capable of recharging Sinestro Corps members right in the middle of the battlefield. Realising that the Green Lantern Corps would be destroyed if things continued, Kilowog and the other senior Lanterns mobilised their forces, and prepared for war:
Soon enough, the Sinestro Corps made its first move, sending the sentient city Ranx to Mogo, with the intention of destroying the planet, in accordance with the Blackest Night prophecy. The destruction of Mog would surely ensure victory for the Sinestro Corps, as it was Mogo who gave Green Lantern Power Rings the ability to find those that would overcome great fear. Without Mogo, the rings would be directionless, and the Green Lantern Corps would fall.
Meanwhile, on Oa, Hal Jordan battled Parallax, desperately trying to stay alive and find Guy Gardner and John Stewart. He was almost defeated when the Lost Lanterns showed up, and together, the group managed to rescue both Hal's fellow corpsmen AND the Ion entity that had been captured by Sinestro. Unfortunately, the Green Lantern known as Ke'Haan was killed during the rescue of Ion from the clutches of the Anti-Monitor. While the Lantern's brought Ion back to Oa, the three remaining human Lanterns headed to Earth to get backup from other Earth heroes, intending to bring them to Oa, where they could fight the Anti-Monitor with the strongest possible force.
Ranx was accompanied by over one thousand members of the Sinestro Corps, and several members of the intergalactic cult known as The Children of the White Lobe for its attack on Mogo. These cultists possessed vast psychokinetic powers, and were able to transform themselves into living bombs of extreme destructive power. Using its gravity disruptors, the plan was to dig to the core of Mogo, where the Children of the White Lobe could detonate, destroying Mogo and the power ring that inhabited his core.
Initially, only three Lanterns defended Mogo (who was also capable of fighting back), but luckily, reinforcements soon arrived in the form of Kilowog's forces, and for a time, the Lanterns gave the enemy forces a fight. Eventually realising that they would only win by going on the offensive, the Lanterns sent a small strike force inside Ranx while Mogo powered down, diverting all his energies in to protecting his core. With Ranx distracted, the remainging Lanterns tried to round up the Children of the White Lobe, hoping to stop them from destroying Mogo. Even with this new momentum, the Lanterns were only going to last so long.
That was until the Guardians decided to do something that nobody could have expected: The rewrote the Book of Oa. They added the first of ten new laws: Lethal Force was now approved against members of the Sinestro Corps. With the ability to kill, the Green Lanterns turned back the Sinestro Corps soldiers, and a young Green Lantern by the name of Sodam Yat destroyed Ranx. The Lanterns had little time to enjoy their victory, receiving word from Hal Jordan that the Sinestro Corps was not in fact heading to attack Oa, the centre of the universe, but Earth, the centre of the Multiverse. They believed that destroying the Earth would annihilate the Multiverse, leaving only the Anti-Matter universe.
While the Sinestro Corps (including Henshaw and his armies, Superboy-Prime and Sinestro) attacked the cities, facing off against the Justice League and Earth's other heroes, the three Earth-born Green Lanterns fought to free Kyle Rayner from Parallax's control. Believing that a painting that Kyle's mother had owned would provide and emotional anchor to assist Kyle in breaking free, Guy Gardner went to collect it while John Stewart and Hal engaged Parallax. Along the way, Guy was attacked by a force of Sinestro Corps soldiers. Heavily outnumbered at first, Guy was saved by the arrival of the Green Lantern army that had previously gathered at Oa. The enemy distracted, Guy was able to get back to Hal (who had since also been absorbed in to Parallax) and John, and using the painting, the Lanterns managed to help Kyle free himself of Parallax's control. Luckily, the Guardians Ganthet and Sayd arrived, and used the miniature power batteries belonging to the four Earth Lanterns to trap Parallax once again. They then reveal that both have been removed from their status as Guardians, because they dared to feel love for one another. Ganthet's last act is to give Kyle Rayner a power ring, asking him to once again become a Green Lantern. Kyle accepted, and all four men charged their power rings. Ganthet and Sayd then explain to the four Lanterns about the seven different Corps, and the War of Light.
TBC...
The fighting that had occured in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and in South Dakota soon ends, and the Sinestro Corps mass their forces in New York, where the Anti-Monitor has just landed on Earth. The Guardians arrive soon after, and infuse Sodam Yat with the Ion Power, making him their 'greatest weapon'. Ion battles Superman-Prime (formerly known as Superboy-Prime), but unfortunately, doesn't succeed (he barely survives), and Prime rejoins the fight against the Green Lantern Corps.
In New York, the battle rages on, with all of Earth's heroes and the Green Lantern Corps on one side, and the Sinestro Corps on the other:
Realising that Coast City is also in danger, Jordan and Rayner head there to try and hold the Sinestro Corps forces back while the inhabitants evacuate. The inhabitants refuse, changing every light in the city so that it burns bright green. Hal and Kyle also hear from Hannu that reinforcements are inbound.
Even though both battles are going well, the problem of the Anti-Monitor still remains, as does the Anti-Matter wall he creates, which is slowly destroying everything it comes in contact with. The Guardians soon join the fray, engaging the Anti-Monitor in direct combat. In Coast City, Hal realises that Sinestro isn't looking to destroy Earth. The villain simply wants to make the Green Lantern Corps feared throughout the universe. He had used his influence to create the Sinestro Corps, knowing that the Guardians would respond by rewriting the book of Oa. In his view, the universe would fear the Green Lantern Corps, and the universe would be better for it.
In New York, the Anti-Monitor is still fighting against the Guardians, even burning one of them with its anti-matter powers. It is soon after that a Despotellis infected Guy Gardner comes up with a plan to destroy the Anti-Monitor. The Lanterns put their plan into action, using Warworld as a missile with which to attack the Anti Monitor (pic 1, pic 2). Using their rings to [brown=red]create a shield around the Anti-Monitor and Warworld, they contain the explosion that seemingly kills both the Anti-Monitor and Hank Henshaw. With Warworld destroyed, the Manhunters are disabled, and unable to recharge the rings of the Sinestro Corps' soldiers. The Anti-Monitor is not finished, and attempts to hit back, only to be attacked himself by Superman-Prime, who believed that the Anti-Monitor was just too weak to get the job done. Prime throws the Anti-Monitor out in to space, before coming back to Earth. He then takes on the Guardians, even killing one, only for the explosive force of the Guardian's death to remove Prime from this universe. While this is happening, Guy Gardner is healed by Leezle Pon, a super-intelligent smallpox virus that is also a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Pon kills Despotellis, saving Guy Gardner from a horrible fate. In Coast City, Hal and Kyle finally defeat Sinestro and take him in to custody.
Earth is safe, as is the Multiverse.
In the aftermath of the battle on Earth, Green Lanterns throughout the universe hunt down and capture any Sinestro Corps rings, so that they might not find new users. When one such Sinestro Corps member, Amon Sur, is brutally killed by a Green Lantern even though he was surrendering, the Guardians believe it is time to hold Green Lanterns even more accountable for their actions. To this end, they create a new division of the Green Lantern Corps, known as the Alpha Lanterns. The purpose of these Alpha Lanterns would be "to police the policemen" of the Green Lantern Corps. The Guardians then institute the second of their ten new laws: Lethal force is now authorised against ALL enemies of the Green Lantern Corps.
Hal Jordan soon learns that Sinestro has been sentenced to death by the Guardians, but that they want it to be done publicly on Korugar, his home planet. Jordan is also made part of the escort that is to bring Sinestro to his final resting place. While he and several Lanterns are performing that escort, they come under fire from a group of Sinestro Corps members. Initially able to fight them off, both Green Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps are stunned when they come under attack by the Red Lantern Corps, led by none other than Atrocitus. Using their own rage and hate to power their rings, they quickly overpower both sides, capturing Sinestro and leaving the likes of Hal Jordan for dead.
Spoiler:
Hal (and the remaining Lanterns) are saved by Saint Walker, a member of the Blue Lantern Corps. He explains that unlike the power rings of the GL Corps, the constructs of his ring are manifested in response to the psychosis of the target. He illustrates this by using the ring on John Stewart, extinguishing the anger within him by showing him that he has something to hope for (John sees that he will once again be with his former love Katma Tui. Saint Walker assures the Lanterns that the Blue Lantern is with the Green Lantern Corps, not against it.Saint Walker then takes Hal Jordan to Odym (the BLC home planet), before revealing to him that both Hal and two members of the BLC need to rescue Sinestro. Saint Walker also tells Hal Jordan that once their rescue mission is successful, he is to lead the Blue Lantern Corps...

Ok, just a warning. There seem to be some coding problems throughout the posts, which is strange, as they worked fine on other forums.
i'll spoiler GL 36, just for anyone who hasnt read it yet... and apparently links are visible through spoilers... editing.

[b]Green Lantern Power RingsThe Power Ring given to each Green Lantern officer is a psionically activated hard light generator.
The Emotional Spectrum
The ring is limited only be the user's willpower and concentration. The more willpower the user has, the more powerful their constructs. By default, every ring casts a protective field around its user,

Really well done mate, but Some of this is incorrect.
First of all its not 'Hard Light' its a plasma. Grant Morisson make reference to this in the 5 issue of Final Crisis, and through out his JLA run. 'Plasma Constructs' is frequently used to describe both Kyles and Hals devices.
The rings also seem now to be limited to how charged the device is, this can be seen when Hal seemingly doubles his power when his ring is charged to 200 %, and when various Green Lanterns run out of power.

the plasma thing keeps shifting. i thought johns had said it was hard light?
if that's true, we have johns and morrison disagreeing.
i did mention the charge though 😛
edit: in GL Rebirth 3, Kyle says it's pure willpower converted in to energy, but doesn't say whether it's plasma or hard light.
hmm... might have to go with morrison on this one...

I prefer the idea of Plasma, it makes the whole this a little (I mean) little more realistic. I mean Plasma exists in our reality, and i've read a book (by some called Michu Kacku) who suggests it could infact be used to make force fields. Hard Light, definitely does not exits on the other hand. P.S. never seen a Johns book refer to it has hard light ?

yeah, i edited, my bad lol...
hmm...
how about i go with this:
The Power Ring given to each Green Lantern officer is a psionically activated willpower energy generator. What this means is that the ring responds to the thoughts of the user, creating whatever shape the user is thinking of in the form of a large, translucent yet solid green object.
does that sound better?
