The man of steel embodies more than just the american way or even the will of good to triumph. He captures the imagination and represents the best of the Silver Age.
The idealism, the hope, the dreams, the possibility that maybe, just maybe, a Superman can make a difference and save the world. Final Crisis being a resounding NO! to the darker and edgier treatment of the 90s and 2000s, a rallying cry that the multiverse of DC, or indeed, the medium of comics itself, is meant for something better.
Not to drown in platitudes or shades of grey, but to rise up above the common drudgery. Superman represents the highest hope of comics, that it can inspire people to change and make the world a better place.
It's not his strength that makes him the best. Nor his speed, or his flight, or his heat vision or any of the kryptonian powers. These do not make a hero. ❌
It's his heart. His belief in something better, the shining example of what people might accomplish if they have hope. Who except Superman, could counter the vast and invincible story-devouring power of Mandrakk? And how does he do it? Not by fighting Mandrakk. But by being a better story, and in the end, wishing for the one thing that always wins the day and puts the world to right, the silver age's greatest gift.
A happy ending. 😄
"This looks like a job for Superman."
