Looking back, nobody could have predicted that Johns would throw continuity out the window and declare it's all canon. 😱
Or Darkseid would be THE villain of Final Crisis.
Well, maybe the 2nd, but a few people were hoping it was someone else. 😛

That kind of character is a prerequisite in events like this. The Monitor and AnitMonitor served for that in the first Crisis. Metron did it to some extent in ZeroHour. No one comes to mind in IC. In 52 either RipHunter or Supernove could be said to be in that role at some level.
Pariah is the absolute best person for that job this time around since he presence cements the whole thing as a Crisis. Though his personality change is rather dramatic.
But Pariah was there in IC. Alex Luthor took him out, since for some reason his immortality was gone.
And Gog is not only back, but he punked Infinity Man, and apparently represents the 3rd world. 😱
Grant Morrison interview. Actually starting to sound like a big event finally. A lot of info.

So that was the first basic idea behind 'Final Crisis.' What would happen if 10 beings with the powers of a Galactus turned up and really decided to **** the world up?
In his first major tease, Morrison said, "Batman isn't coming back from it. Batman, as we know him, is not coming back from it."
Pretty well from #4 to #7 is one big battle royale. I want to leave lots of room for the fight. There's about ten issues worth of fighting," said Morrison.
"Asked right out the gates if "Final Crisis" was truly DC's final "Crisis," Morrison told CBR News, "There are still all kinds of words to put in front of 'Crisis.' There's 'Constant Crisis', 'Future Crisis', 'Mid-Life Crisis.' But please don't say that to them [DC]. Really, don't even hint that there could be more crises"
hahhahahha.
But otherwise, this interview basically made me orgasm about Final Crisis.
Except that poor J'onn clearly isn't going to make it.

"GR: Yeah – something happens in Final Crisis that sets him off on the traditional Spectre journey which is, “Horrible thing has happened, I will go punish the wicked,” and then he finds himself in a position where he is literally unable to do it. And if he is powered by God, and he is unable to do it, there has to be a reason for it. "
Interesting.
