Even if it helped it didn't do much most of the empahasis is on increasing Hulks jumping power. edit: so he can move in space.

Wrong. In that comic the scientist repeatedly mentioned that hulk wud use his strength to do it. Even going as far as saying that even with his strength they thought it was impossible. The scientist are the ones who designed the rocket springs and they did not design them wiht enough force to destroy the asteroid by simply flinging hulk into them. They themselves said hulk had to use his strength to do it.
