Yes, he failed but not because of what you stated, the energies was actually within him cept he couldn't contain it, it was fighting back.. At least that how i remembered it.. 🙂

I don't know why people are bring the ego incident.
The only reason Quasar succided while surfer fail it's simple Quasar Q band are more adaptive (it was even explained by Quasar). It was also stated that the process would mostly kill anyone who tired it.
And I also don't see how absorbing energy from Ego = absorbing energy from superman.
Reed clearing indicated to both Surfer and Quasar even before they started absorbing the energy that it could KILL THEM - and he is telling this to Quasar and SS who has absorbed near infinite amount of energy in the past the different is NOT from someone who is near Galactus level in power.
The power that Ronan using from ego easily put him over marvel earth.
he was easily dealing with likes of THor , BRB etc...............
Granted there is many energy absorbers involved in that arc Quasar and his Q-bands were perfect for containing ego.
People forgot that.
1) Quasar had the same problem as SS absorbing it's energy.(was feeling lots of pain)
2) Quasar only was able to absorb it because he could adapt to it meaning less painful.
3) Even after absorbing it Quasar went Exile right away fearing it would get released on earth.
and Q-band > Power cosmic for absorbing energy

After the upgrade/Unilord fight, Surfer travelled back to the breach and gave all the energies he absorbs...
He didn't loose his upgrade just the energies..
There was no mention of him converting back to his classic configuration after coming back in 616 universe...
He had the same configuration tell receiving another upgrade from Galactus..
Conclusion: Yes with teh upgrade..lol
The best that I've seen at least is when SS went insane and lost his intelligence from absorbing a portion of a sun.

I just find that far fetched, taking all his showings into consideration. Why don't we go ahead and give Supes T-Vo, forcing Surfer to fight him on an astral plane? For a guy with so many esoteric powers he doesn't know how to use them. I don't know why people don't mention it often enough but Surfer is a lot like PC Supes (minus and plus a few abilities).
