Because it has been proven that the ring is Pareto Optimal.
Meaning, that with the ring you will have a GL's powers with
Superman's powers, but with Superman's powers you will just have
Superman's powers.

Except no realworld humans have the willpower required to do that.
I find it rather funny that someone would cite this as a reason against choosing the Green Lantern ring, but somehow people presume that they would have they necessary level of discipline to keep from destroying everything you touch while doing the most menial tasks that one normally takes for granted, to keep from accidentally seriously injuring or even killing all the incredibly weak regular humans you encounter (lose your temper with someone, get in a fight, take a swing, and suddenly that person turns into a bloody goo and you're in some deep ish)—and for every waking moment for the rest of your life, to be capable of keeping from going crazy after being able to stand hearing EVERYTHING all at once until you finally get to the level of control where you can choose what you want to hear, etc.
😆
I've actually thought about this before, and GL ring all the way for me. The GL is much more versatile, and you have MUCH more options than you do with Supes' powers. When you have Superman's powers, you're limited to that powerset, whereas with the ring you can do ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE. I fail to see how this could even be a contest.
In the comic it's necessary to not use people's abilities to their full potential in order that there be a story, but since there are no such limitations in this scenario, using a modicum of creativity, a GL ring bearer should be able to easily handle a Kryptonian.
illadelph12 said it best when he said the GL ring is the thinking man's choice.
I'll take a ring please.
