The first movie wasn't all that great as far as story and plot goes. That's never been what the Predator franchise has been about. The first film was just cool because of all of the studs with big muscles all in one film(like The Expendables will be).
It wasn't nearly on par story-wise with District 9 or to a lesser degree, Aliens.

Exactly kept it simple and nothing fancy
Read part 1 of the prequel comic which has two stories...with the first one has a team of Navy Seals they're in Afganistan and then next there on the planet in this film and Nolan (Fishburnes character) kills all but one
and the second story is about Adrien Brody character Royce.

The story is what it had to be for this scifi horror film, it's not the shawshank redemption (2 totally different movies)but it was a great film and the story was way better than alien 3 4 and avp-r.
The draw of predator was arnie and the predator not anyone else really.
Now the expendables with all the big name big muscles and will suck ass.
Originally posted by darthmaul1I don't know if I'd call Predator that a great film, but it was one of the films I grew up on as a child. No, it's not Shawshank Redemption, but it isn't on par with the first two Teminator films or District 9 for that matter. All three of those films could be put into the Sci-Fi/Action/Thriller category and they all deliver with superb acting, story, and action. Predator only really delivers with one of those traits. The acting wasn't necessarily bad but it wasn't good either. The film's story didn't call for it to be. Schwarzenegger was of course the headline but the film was filled with a bunch of typecast badasses as well. The story? There wasn't really anything new about the film. We had just seen a film called Aliens that involved a group of elite Marines fighting a deadly alien species. The only thing that was original about the film was the Yautja's invisibilty. Everything else was pretty cliche and formulaic. Granted, they may have handled it better than alot of previous films, but still.....the story wasn't groundbreakingly original.

I by no means think of Predator as a film that no sequel or reboot can potentially surpass. It wasn't that great a film. Same with Batman 89. It got alot of publicity and hype because it was Batman. But at the end of the day, it wasn't that great. Batman Returns is awfully close to matching it. Same with Predator 2 coming really close to matching the first film.
I think this new film could surpass the first film. It seems to have a good cast and a good director. We will see.
