quick question for anyone playing the other games. what mods, if any, are you using for dark crusade or soulstorm? a week is far too long to wait, so i want to play as much DOW (beta is so-so atm) as i can...

i've already tried light warp and annihilation on DC...

try Firestorm over Kronos, it has a lot of love for Chaos, Imperial Guard, Space marines, by that i mean many many new units and even some special gameplay mechanics (youve got the mark system for Chaos e.g. Mark of Nurgle, Khorne etc to gain diffrent units). Theres a lot in the mod for Orks, Tau and Elder imo as well, not as much as those others but plenty to play with and very enjoyable. Unfortunaltey as I find in most mods, Necrons get the least changes although tbh ive not played as them much so if theres statistic changes or a special upgrade somewhere ive missed I apologise.

The mod is imo great, theres another bonus (imo) that you either love or hate, its made it more realistic so that normal bolters and light weapons do not do such higher damage to vehichles, said vehichles are very powerful on the battlefield, more so than before AND are almost immune to light weapon fire, only missle weapons or other Anti-machine weapons are good against vehihcles/buildings now.

ah. i may give it a go... thx for the recommendation...

Well, we are two days away from the release 'switch-on' date now. Some people have in fact received their copies on pre-order, but they won't work until Thursday.

shit. i want mine NOW!!! ha-son.

i had an awesome game the other night, didn't even get the points, but i had such fun that i didn't care. started off with two other teams of marines (funny enough, i was the commander, one guy was a techmarine and the other was the apothecary). we were up against one of each, eldar, tyranid and orks on that mos eisley looking place.

first, we made a strong push down the map, i took most of the left side, but any further push and my assault marines got slaughtered (though watching them leap in to a crowd in one final act of defiance was bloody awesome). they'd pushed back against us in the centre, but with my teammate using a razorback (i havent used it, so i have no idea of its capabilities), we started pushing back, and once we'd secured the central victory point, i brought in a tactical squad with a rocket launcher and a plasma cannon squad. we were holding out well enough, fighting off their infantry, until the biggest tyranid b*stard i have ever seen comes waltzing in. he destroys the razorback, and my commander tries to fight him one on one. while this is happening, we build up enough of that red resource (i don't remember what its called), so i call in the terminators. they pwned HARD. that rocket barrage wasted their infantry like nobody's business. eventually, my predator arrives, and starts battling their big tyranid thing while infantry go at it all crazy like.

then i notice the orbital bombardment attack is available. i drop it right on that tyranid b*stard's head while my predator runs away like a scared child to avoid the blast.

we eventually won on victory points, but i loved ecvery second of it.

I had a godawful day yesterday- played about ten games in a row. Lost a load- three times was stuck with players who didn't have a clue when against experienced ones, twice because one of our players was not actually playing (some people leave their computer on when out to play losing matches so they still score, whilst some people are simply afk at the point the server finds a enw game for them to play) and twice through bad play. Three wins- not one of them counted. I was apoplectic.

This morning? Four wins in a row, all counted. One win the reverse of the trouble I had yesterday (was up against clueless players), but three others with solid players on both sides, none of whom quit when things got bad. Good stuff. Just goes to show the luck of the draw though.

All for nothing of course as the scores get reset in... just over six hours.

That was a Carnifex, btw. It is difficult to get an idea of what the various Tyrannid unit types do (they all look like bugs...) but the big bastard is a Carnifex and he is very lethal indeed- tbough a trifle oddly has not been given the daemon/monster unit type (like the Avatar) but counts as a vehicle instead, so use your missile launchers on it.

But yes- games of this can be pretty darn awesome.

Check this out- stats from the first two weeks of play (before the beta patch)

Very awesome too that they can check these stats and make adjustments accrodingly.

Apparently they have already made adjustments to single player in response to some criticisms in reviews- a shame those reviews have to come so early, when the actual release will be different.

thanks, ill try to have more rocket men next time...

i'm glad the scores are being reset, and the game is being adjusted. means we all get a blank slate come game time...

Indeedy. I was on 25/24 win/loss with Marines, btu my Eldar record was a less encouraging 13/22. I think I'll stick with them though- definitely more my play style.

sneaky bastardness? 😛

Yes, and...

No!

It's the light, mobile firepower. Closest I can get to the Tau right now. Also less of the rampant repressed homosexuality of the Space Marine Chapters, and led by hot women too.

But on the sneaky side I DO enjoy sniping with Rangers... it seems a lot of players don't know how to cope with that. Sadly, playing against the AI Rangers are not so good as the computer rarely tries to defend a position.

But they out and out say in the link I gave above that due to the amount of play vs. AI being done, they are going to improve the AI in the coming months,. Yay!

hmm

good point.

For example, against a clueless bunch yesterday (one of my wins that didn't count, grr...) I think my out-of-his-sight Rangers sniped out some eight Marines in a row that were camped inside a building.

Because it is generally such a fast paced fighting game, I do think it flummoxes a lot of players if they are being successfully sniped.

Of course the downside is that Rangers are pricey and die in about two seconds if actually shot at.

FINALLY, someone else can see it! I thought I was the only one.

Yeah, we all know what 'battle brothers' is a euphemism for...

Hee. I like the Eldar.

Which of course is exactly what you predicted I'd like, but yeah.

The only races I enjoy is the SM and the Orks. Eldar are really strong but I don't like their style and design, and Tyranids are too zergish.

i agree about the eldar. i just don't like them. they're too physically weak for me, and that's a big no no for me. orks are good, and the IG make up for their lack of durability wih sheer numbers, and their tanks are awesome.

i wonder if we'll get the IG in DOW2. Their style of warfare seems contradictory to the whole mechanic of the game. unless they compromise. maybe make the squads normal size (for the game, so 4-5 units), but make them piss cheap so you can have a lot of them...

I dont think I noticed, but did they have Harlequins?

Non-playable IG are in the Single Player campaign so we'll see how they are there.

Nope, no Harlequins yet. And frankly it is hard to see a niche for them right now. DOWII is a game where every unit has its use and duplication is avoided. With Eldar, for esxample, there are no Dire Avengers as they would just have the same job as Guardians, and they are definitely avoiding the 'same purpose but better' idea. There is nothing Harlequins do that other Eldar uits don't.

Possibly a Harlequin hero, though, if they add a fourth hero for each faction. So long as they can give it a niche (Warp Spider Exarch is already speedy/sneaky strike guy).

Do you get normal Warp spiders?
