Ive turned down the texture settings to Medium, the game worked but then again, its worked on "high" settings before as well, I think ill have to do some more extensive tests with settings if you think that "may" be the problem.
Ime defragmenting my hardrive, there are a lot of fragmented files so it may help the machine out some.
Meanwhile...
Well, I've been playing and so far the single player is good. I thought I would styart on Captain level, but the ridiculous amount of damage enemy grenades do to you put me off so I switched down to Sergeant- which is a shame, as the firefights are now toon easy; it was just those darn grenades in Captain. Well, maybe I'll play at that level another time.
Sorry for dobule posting but I cannot edit and have a few questions:
After playing the game for a while, beating the Hard A.I a few times, and enjoying the game overall.
Ime simply wondering if theres a challenge in the A.I? for example in the old Dawn of war, "insane" could indeed kick my @ss on many maps and I think I only beat it a couple of times wheras in DoW2, I find Hard A.I giving me a fun battle, but not making me feel dangered. Is expert much harder? or do I need to go into multiplayer for the real challenge.
My other questions are based around that:
1. What is found the best race so far? theres always a race that people take to more than others, theres also usualyl a fairly overpowered, even if its only slight race in the early stages of release of a new game like this.
2. My favourite race are Tyranids, does anyone have any specific tactics for them? or even better, how do you play against them?
3. This is last one is a question to you Ush, how do you deal with vehichles earlier in the game with Eldar? I find myself having difficulties early-middle in the game when Dreadnoughts are roaming, the Wrath lord is powerful but is there any fast/infantry anti-tank?
hm I see, playing as them I feel my Fire prisms were pretty good but their late game, I cant rely on them and Wraith lords are slow. Although yeh your prob right.
oh and I think the unit population limit should be increased to about 2-300, the current population limit I feel does not allow me to make enough good units that I require at a set time.

oh? thats a relief, then, as steam is on the partition...
ok, ive been playing since, sheesh, 3pm today.
spoilers, etc.
loving the game. better than i was expecting. i love how grenades are so useful...
campaign is very well put together, imo, and the first appearence of the tyranids was pretty sweet.
i was suprised at how much campaign difficulty differs from multiplayer. i mean, sure, there are obvious differences, but the sheer amount of differences in units and strategy and everything was really surprising.
the upgrading squads mechanic is very cool, lots of flexibility when it comes to customising your commander. one thing i don't like, though, is that i can only mod the commander himself, and not individual units. if i'm only going to have three or four guys per squad, i want more options. just be careful, though, a couple of bad decisions, and you end up with an assault marine squad packing
Spoiler:
normal bolters, which just ruins em imo.
speaking of the assault marines, i hated them in previous games. i never used them, as they didn't suit the way i played the game at all. now, though, they're pretty much essential against certain races for me. their ability to bypass cover and come down right on people's heads makes them insanely badass. also, they're so strong at melee that against the
Spoiler:
eldar and the tyranids, they kick plenty of ass.
also, eldar are b*stards. just finished the first meridian mission with them. bunch of ***** *****. lookaround
The AI is not great, but if youlook at the link I provided earlier about the ingame stats, you will find their pledge to improve it as plaiyng vs AI has been very popular. It ook modders to m ake decent AI for the originakl; we'll see.
Obviously the Wraithlord with a Brightlance is a good vehicle counter, but since power weapons cvs. vehicles were downgraded in the beta patch, the Howling Banshee Exarch is no longer much good aty it (though they can do some damage). Your best bet is to lure foes into Birghtlance Platform traps. Two of those kills vehicles quickly, and at no power cost.
hm I hope so, Multiplayer atm just does not seem my sort of thing, theres too many cheap tactics like disconnections and the like and in previous online experiances in RTS multiplayer I find people are usually either extremely arrogent, uncaring or downright nasty, especially younger players who think their winning and then you do something clever that turns the tide, they start ranting and name callling.
I like a nice silent computer opponent who can give me a run for my money.
I do absolutely agree that the biggest problem with playing against other people is... other people.
What they really need to sort out first with the AI is setting up a defence. It keeps its fixed point weapons moving all the darn time so they are easy to catch and kill, unable to defend themselves. The basic tactical set-up of DOWII is fixed defensive positons as opposed to various ways to take them on (flanking, jump troops or my personal favourite, snipers), but if the computer isn't defending that junks a good portion of the game.
Which is why the AI is best used with Tyrannids, who don't have any fixed position units and hence that issue is avoided.
I have also never seen the AI garrison a building or use the more powerful call-ins,. In fact I am unsure I have ever seen him use any global abilities.
well just beat the Exert, had map control and his hero dead in like pretty much as long as it took me to cap each point, barely any resistance. The only thing is it was annoying when it kept capping points on the other side of the map, when my force was elseware but I lost only a few units. It was disapointingly easy 🙁
But I find the larger games are more fun, with 3 on each side.

on the first three or four levels of campaign, i saw both orks and eldar garrison buildings. or do you mean in multiplayer?

Indeed so.
In fact in single player the scripting is simple- certain units are just pre-programmked in trhe scenario to occupy a building and never leave it, regardless of hiow suicidal it is. Obviously that's no good for skirmish. I imagine trying to code AI for occupying buildings dynamically is tricky.

yeah, i'd imagine so.
so, for anyone who's playing campaign, what are your default loadouts?
for every mission, i have:
Force Commander with sword and pistol (whichever is the most upgraded, no ranged weapon above a one handed pistol)
Tarkus' Marine squad. Standard marines are more uber than i was expecting them to be, especially if they have good cover and that handy grenade accessory. insane damage soak to boot. not crap in melee either. i wish the range was higher on the grenades though. Atm, i have tarkus with a plasma gun, as i havent gotten far enough to get any further upgrades. Currently wondering if i should switch him back to the bolter though...
Avitus' heavy bolter squad. For my money, possibly the best squad in the game. Get them with in the right spot with a good arc, and they pretty much waste everything that even dares get in range. I have a missile launcer on Avitus, so he know does damage to buildings and vehicles. Might switch back to the heavy bolter though, as its suppression ability is pretty handy.
For Ork missions, i add:
Cyrus' Sniper Squad. Their camouflage, coupled with the det packs, allows for awesome hit and run attacks on structures (as the orks quite rightly scatter when you throw a det pack). Scouts are much improved over the previous games imo. I know there isn't a huge difference in general, but given how little you have manpower wise, their infiltration ability takes on a whole new level of importance.
For Tyranid and Eldar Missions, i have:
Thaddeus and his Assault Squad. Eldar and the Tyranids suffer in melee combat, and that's where Thaddeus comes in, as Scouts tend to suck in close quarters. Give them the suppression upgrade, and every jump they make in to a crowd gives them a very good advantage, and they are beastly in hand to hand combat. As i said before, i hated Assault Marines, but with the cover mechanic in this game, they work much better than i could have imagined. I make sure they have their chainswords though. I made the mistake of giving them bolters on an eldar mission, and it was the biggest mistake i could have made. I would have liked an extra man on the team, though, to be fair.
Any suggestions?
