Exactly, and they pwned McClane's ass as soon as he walked into the room. He was down on the ground virtually defenseless, and the only reason he didn't die is that Gabriel decided to molest him out of stupidity and Farrell saved everybody. McClane couldn't handle them. We were discussing the helicopter scene where Bauer had to call in an airstrike. McClane + gun + bullets = dead helicopter gunner, dead helicopter pilot + captured Saunders.
In regards to your downplay, McClane had gone through a lot and kicked much ass up to that point. MIF pulled him through though, all villains were dead, day was saved, evil was stopped another day.
Nope. He's not making those shots. He was lucky in DH1 that he was delaing with candy-stealing amateurs who were all slightly distracted by the big laugh-off they just had. In DH4, when he took on opponents who knew WTF they were doing, he got off one shot (against the defenseless hacker) before he immediately got WTFpwned. And there's no wire to help Bauer, nor a tunnel with a cop car. He's not taking the helicopter. He gets minced.

Considering the MIF has pulled him through much, much, much worse than a lone machine-gun in a grounded helicopter, it stands to reason he would pull through that scene; with ease no less; while making a witty remark.

Gabriel thought McClane was beaten(shot, bleeding, exhausted out of ammo etc) and wanted to make him suffer, since he screwed with his plans and you know, killed his girlfriend and then mocked him over it. McClane pulled through via MIF. Don't tell me you expected McClane to shoot through himself to win the day.
You don't use the same measuring stick for when Bauer was chained to a chair and was at the mercy of his captor(s) on more than one occasion. They even went so far as to have a doctor revive his dead ass at one point. Why is that?
