"Well, it seems reasonable" Gallador nods to Rand.

"We could cetrainly exchange services, if you can offer us worthwile help."

So really Ush was that deputy that broken or did you just meant he is temporary disabled?

"Used to be big news, did Galder. Not done so much lately. Galaxy can be like that sometimes. No man can make it on his own."

Who has got a good Observation score?

"Or we could appease our friend the Marshall here," Rand says. "I do not see how threatening him will help us. We do not need to impose upon him the importance of not crossing us. Right, Zorin?"

"You are a man of irony, Rand. As you said our first objective is the thief. And, at least I, don't see a reason to pospone it"

I got 2.

He's no plot-based use to you, I'll leave it like that.

-

Zorin smiles.

"You're certain he's here? Does he know anyone's after him?"

"It is possible"

"I am not post-poning our objective," Rand reasons. "I am merely seeing to it that the process of finding Briande is shortened so that we must only be concerned with the actual capture of him."

Rand turns to Zorin. "We are certain. And he does."

2 is good enough to spot one of the printouts laid out on his desk is from the Bureau.

"Well, if he knows he's being chased, and he came here, then that means he's in the Desert, and then boy, you need as much help as possible. See, the other half of the rumour is pretty simple, and that is that no criminal is dumb enough to go into the Desert either, and that's because no-one with any brains goes in there, and that's because every single person that goes into the Desert of Stones dies."

"Fair enough. I say we let the man, talk. And see where it leads us. Please go ahead, Zorin"

"What is special about the Desert?"

Rand frowns. He recalls the area that reflected the starship sensors when they were coming in for landing.

"The Desert of Stones?" Rand asks. "Why is that, Marshall?"

"Well, like I said" You are standing on the richest planet in the quadrant! There is more wealth on this planet than there is in entire sectors of the Republic- even the Inner Core ones. Billions of credits, maybe trillions.

"So now, don't you want to know," he says, putting a particularly Texan emphasis on the words, "why I, leader of the richest planet a man ever saw, is reduced to living in this dump of a town?"

"This is good question, surely. There is something very dangerous about this Desert."

"If it helps me get my bounty. Go on"

"I would certainly be interested in knowing," Rand says.

"Well, because all of that wealth is buried in the Desert of Stones. It's a vast area of super-dense material not found in the same make-up on any other surveyed planet. The compsotion of the rocks is harder than most spaceship hulls and only millions of years of erosion have exposed the upper layers, mkaing this landscapee of deadly, jagged rocks. The dense material tends to screw over scanners as well.

"But alongisde all that dense rock, burtied deep down, is mineral wealth like you would not believe. Precious metals, gems... you name it, it's there. Enough for a million ofrtunes or more.

"Now, don't you want to know why we don't just mosey on in there and get to it?"

"Yes, we would," Rand says, becoming slightly concerned.

"Please" Con says slightly irritated

"Well, because quite a few people kinda had the same idea, you see? And for a while, everyone came here to get rich. All the stuff revealed on the surface was gathered in no time at all, you need huge mining equipment to get to the rest. So amateur prospectors gave way to professional prospectors, and they took a 'professional' attirude to each other, which is to say they started blasting the hell out of each other! Five way wars or more there every night. Until eventually, the biggest fish of all got a claim on the area. Now, [i]don't you want to know[/i[] what happened there so that no-one comes here any more?"

Dak says nothing, though he is amused that Zorin is quite obviously enjoying himself now.
