Why do so many people think that Goku is a bad father?

You only showed goku's bad side and vegeta's good side

Pretty sure Vegeta is a better father than Goku is.
Let's compare how they react when their sons are in mortal danger.
Vegeta:
Goes berserk when Trunks is killed by Cell.
Goku:
Slacks off at training because he's "confident Gohan can beat Cell".
Vegeta:
Sacrifices himself in an attempt to destroy Majin Buu for the sake of his family and friends.
Goku: Saves a shameless fraud instead of his own sons when Buu blows up the earth.

Goku's a pretty terrible father, and husband. Sure, he saves the universe and all, but that's beause he loves fighting. Not from a sense of duty.

Goku and responsibility don't mix, which is something he inherited from Sun Wukong, the folk hero he's based off of. Basically, Goku's a simple "Peter Pan" who does what he likes to do. Or put another way, he's a hedonist, and fighting is his vice. Raising kids, settling down with the wife and working out how to send the kids to college isn't for him.

But in his defense, he was kind of tricked into getting married. Guy wasn't even in puberty yet when he got promised to Chi Chi, and didn't even know what marriage meant.

When in the Manga did it ever say Goku slacked off in training because he thought Gohan could beat Cell? He trained and then realized Gohan was stronger than he was and thought Gohan could beat Cell.

For plot reasons Goku had to save Mr Satan. If Gohan, Trunks and Goten were saved they would of easily destroyed Kid Buu. Hell either Gotennks or Gohan would of beat Buu by themselves.

Thinking about it, it makes some sense. He saw that Gohan still had that rage/inner potential and was sure it would allow him to defeat Cell. With that I can see Goku spending less focus on himself for the sake of this reason. Making Gohan go from Namek!Vegeta+ to Perfect Cell level in a year must have taken the majority of his time.
