LOL, I've not even played Halo 1, just 2 and 3.I think I'll play no. 1 first and then I'll read the books.
Or viceversa.
It depends, The Fall of Reach leads right up to the begining of Halo CE. So if you want some background Captain Keyes, Cortana, master chief, etc then read the book first.

I've yet to read Cole Protocol,
Same here, I heard the book was good but not the best in the Halo universe. From I understand the spartans in Grey team are supporting characters in the novel and we find out the arbiter of halo 2/3's name.
And anything that features the sargent owns in my book.
It did, however, confirm that the Covenant in its entirety only consisted of "billions."

No.But I hope that seven species would comprise more than billions. Especially the Grunts.
Same goes for the Drones. Though I believe the prophets only number in the thousands. According to halopedia the Lekgolo, which are worms/eel like creatures that live in colonies that make up the Hunters are most the most abundant species with numbers in the trillions, though it is not sourced I think that numbers is accurate. I don't think it contradicts the billions number because they live in colonies to create the hunter form and possibly others tat haven't been shown but that's another topic.
Don't forget that Master Chief is able to utilize all weapons on a battlefield. I'll be a little off topic again - all Special Forces no matter what training the receive, are profient in the use of any weapon on the battlefield. It is safe to say, that MC wouldn't have trouble using a blaster.
Back to the point, Stormtroopers seeem to have a problem with accuracy and their armor isn't shielded. Master Chief's armor is and the weapons he uses don't seem to have a problem plowing through Covenant or Flood shielding.
Did I fail to mention to sticky aka Plasma grenades? Master Chief also destroyed a ship that was overrun by the Flood.
Contrary to popular belief, and despite what Ushgarak might say, the idea that stormtroopers are terrible shots is simply the result plot induced stupidity. As Obi-Wan himself says on Tatooine to Luke, "only Imperial stormtroopers are so accurate." That they didn't nail Luke or Leia during their many gunfights is because, on paper, they should have obliterated our intrepid heroes. But we can't have that for the purposes of the plot.
Hell, you could say that the Nazis in the Indiana Jones series were shitty shots, too. Even though in reality, Nazi Germany fielded the highest trained troops in existence during the war.
Excellent point Gideon, but in the firefight on Endor, why didn't the rebels take more casaulties - I mean wounded. How can a friggen Ewok kill a stormtrooper with a club or a rock? The Nazi troops you refer to are the Wafveen SS and Hitler's elite Airborne units. But back to stormtroopers, it is a possibilty they used air support against that large of a target. A blaster rifle wouldn't be able to puncture the hull of that transport.
