My List:

Assassin's Creed 2
Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn+ Throne of Bhaal
Crono Trigger
Kotor 2
Planescape Torment
Portal
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Shadow of the Colossus
Silent Hill 2
Thief 2: The Metal Age

Note, these are objectively good but not my personal favourite. I havn't actually played every one of these games but I know enough for them to merit a place. Others that I either don't know enough of or are just runners up are:

Rome: Total War+BI, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, Neverwinter Nights+SOU+HOTU, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, Icewind Dale 2, Resident Evil 2, Duex Ex, God of War trilogy, Braid, Batman: Arkham Asylam, Too Human 😖hifty: , Half Life 2, Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 9.

Ironically out of all 30 games listed Chrono Cross is probably the one I would say is the single best game ever made, and at the very least in the top 5 among the likes of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4 and Xenosaga Episode I and III. What didn't you like about it out of curiosity? The only things I genuinely didn't like about it is the silent protagonist, the tiny degree of non linearity to the storyline it possessed, at times poor pacing and direction, and I can't say I'm too big a fan of turn based combat and the PS1 graphics are pretty dated. However its storyline and music are second only to Xenogears (and I'd be in the minority in saying that Xenogears even beats it in the latter catagory; anyone who's played it will for the most part say it has the finest video game sountrack of all time), it has the finest technical graphics the PS1 has to offer, and arguably the finest artistic design for any game, period, and its gameplay truly was the best that turn based gameplay has to offer.

I mean it was just a very beautiful and artistic game, look at the world map for example, it's probably one of the finest works of art I've ever seen, not to mention the absolutely incredibly atmospheric music playing in the background which is genuinely one of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard. It's rare to find a game that has such beauty in its variety as Chrono Cross does.

In dis order...

1. SFIII 3rd Strike

2. MVC1 and 2

3. SSFIV and Vampire Savior

4. Samurai Showdown I and II

5. GG Accent Core +

6. KOF 98

7. GG XXX Midnight Carnival

8. Project Justice

9. SF Alpha 2 Gold or normal

10. A bunch of other shit.

Yup, mostly fighters.

Cross is bad mostly becuase of the terrible characters. I mean, there are over 40 of them and they're all either batshit insane, batshit insanely designed, bland or have hairtearingly appalling accents. Most of them have jackshit to do with the story outside of 1 line of dialogue they might say if you have them in your party and then shut up. They barely count as characters. They're more like weapons with opposable thumbs who (very) occasionally sprout bad dialogue. Plus you can only have 3 party members in battle at once, which is crap when you have 20+ characters with you at the time. Originally they were going to have 60+ characters btw. Also the main character is bland and badly designed, the level design is hit and miss, ranging from gorgeous to bollocks, the main villian Lynx is a nonsensical protentious pillock who rambles pseudophilisophical gibberish and has an ugly hat. The storyline is pretty ****ed up too, often not bothering to give you direction or motivation for what you're doing and other times being full-stop convoluted with, as you said, bad pacing.

That said, it isn't bad per say. The music is great and some of the locations are good (and actually use more colours than black, grey and brown) and the combats alright if somewhat wierd. Its okay, but not a good game for a sequel to Trigger.

But seriously, **** Korcha.

Well, in terms of storyline Chrono Cross did kind of screw the main characters from Chrono Trigger...

All that emotional investment in Crono, Marle, Robo, Lucca.. All get shafted.

At least Frog has a happy ending.

Panzer Dragoon Saga was pretty awesome. Really good combat system, and morphing your dragons form while changing physical stats on the fly was a nice feature.

For my money, it was beat any Final Fantasy game past Six. Too bad hardly anyone got to play it, and it will never see a port because Sega lost the source code.

For shame on the the people leaving out early Shining Force games.
Not enough people have mentioned Golden Sun saga, too few mentioned Uncharted 2, no one on the board has probably played Broken Sword 1 or 2. Way too few sega saturn owners here too..anyone heard of Dragon Force? No? For Shame!

I tried to play Broken Sword 1, but a silly bug means I can't go forward anymore. Plus it was pretty shite anyway.

Dragon Force was good. For my money, Guardian Heroes is up there with great beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage. And it's not simply a Final Fight clone either, it plays differently..

And if we're talking Saturn games, you can't forget Shining Force III, the best of the series.

So wrong.... Broken Sword 1 & 2 are fantastic games.

I'm guessing the bug is probably a scratch on the disc... or your computer. I've never had a single issue with it.

Yeah that was a great game.

I will take "best" to mean "games I had the most fun with"...also I will name 13...just cause.

Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)
Star Fox 64 (N64)
Goldeneye (N64)
Spider-Man 2 (XBox)
Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)
Portal (Xbox 360)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
Pokemon Red (Game Boy Color)
Gothic (PC)
Half Life (PC)
Diablo 2 (PC)
Baldur's Gate (PC)
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (PC)

The characters do seem to be a pretty big point of critisicm when it comes to Cross, but the way I see it is that the core set of characters, particularly when you place them into your party at the right times (because I'm cool I used a walkthrough tailored to guiding you when exactly to bring certain characters with you for the best story scenarios), are all detailed relatively decently; this numbers around a dozen and includes the likes of Kid, Glenn, Nikki, Harle, Karsh, Viper, Fargo, Riddel, Radius, Leena, Guile, Grobyc, Leah, Luccia, and Serge (who is developed more subtlely through how characters interact with him and the role he takes in the story; Cross does this far more effectively with Serge than Trigger did with Crono), which is far more than the average RPG. It seems people like to focus on the number of characters that weren't well detailed in Cross rather than the number of characters that were. Not developing such a large cast of characters is as big a point of critisism for Chrono Cross as it is for any game; that the number of characters were included in your party in Cross without being properly detailed simply means that they added little to Cross, not that they took anything away from it. As it stands the level of character detail was far greater in Cross than it was in Trigger (as well as the vast majority of RPGs), where with the possible exception of Frog and Magus every character in Cross that I listed were far more wholly detailed. The focus was on Serge, Kid, and Lynx, and the plot and setting anyway, any real problems with the rest of your party members is of little concern seeing as how minimal the significance they had on the entire product was in the first place.

Excellent points. And, yes, that music is great. I loved it.

I'll put my list up.

No particular order:

Starcraft2
Super Metroid (may be my most favored game)
Goldeneye
Fable
Fable 2
Mario Kart double Dash.
Mech Warrior 3 (with expansion...dudes, don't deny this! Customizing your mechs and unlocking new shit was one of the funnest things I've ever done.)
Perfect Dark
Legend of Zelda: OoT
Tetris and many of its interations. (I played Tretris 2 for the SNES probably more than any other. It was like a combination of Dr. Mario and Tertris and had multiplayer...really hard to top that Tertris game. Tertris for the gamecube was awesome, too (don't remember it's name...but it was the one before tetris sphere. It introduced cascading which I had been preaching that tetris should have for about a decade.))

Honorable mention: Eternal Darkness. One of the best stories and game elements to date. Very unique experience at times and hard to top this games's originality.

- In no particular order:

Super Mario Bros.
Mega Man 2 & 3
Mega Man X1-3
Contra
Ice Climbers
Sonic the Hedgehog (2, 3 & Knuckles)
Yes, I like Retro Games uhuh

"Newer" games:
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest VII
God of War trilogy
Ratchet & Clank 2 & 3
Okami
Jak & Daxter: Precursor Legacy
Tekken 3
