I thought this film was brilliant.
Not brilliant in an Apocalypse Now sense, but it was the movie I wanted the first one to be.
Unlike comic book movies, there isn't one set of source material. Transformers have always had many continuities and timestreams, so it's not outlandish, to me, to view this as just another depiction of Transformers. As I said regarding the first one, people bitching about it not being G1 are being dumb. It's not meant to be G1.
This movie had what the first one didn't have (And I understand they couldn't risk blowing so much on CGI in case it flopped); many more scenes of TF dialogue, more action, better set pieces and was very funny.
Seriously cool opening scene, to boot.
Of course, there are flaws;
I think the pacing was kinda disjointed and I think the voice casting was off, besides Prime, Starscream, Wheelie, Jetfire and Megatron. I also feel that they relied too much on people having read the Alliance/Defiance prequel comics.
Additionally, the fight scenes still had that kind of spastic-in-a-disco style of shooting, but the one in the forest was truly well done and it seemed like Michael Bay took on most of the criticisms.
There were also TOO MANY characters in this. The Constructicons kind of got no time, besides the odd action scene and the Devastator scene. Soundwave, despite being voiced by Frank Welker, did not have a synthesised voice, and thus just ended up sounding like Dr. Claw.
However, as unhappy as I was with his role, that's pretty much all he COULD have done, I think. I mean, as the cast stood. I would have sacrificed the Constructicons for Soundwave as the concept art depicted him (The surveillance truck).
Ravage was awesome, he looked dangerous, vicious, pretty brilliant. I loved Skids and Mudflap, their interaction was hilarious, though cliched. Wheelie was very enjoyable and Jetfire was pretty cool.
I really thought Devastator looked crap beyond belief in the concept pictures, but I have to say...the scene where they all merged was...pretty blinding. Though, the Constructicons kept showing up during the Egypt battle, and how is that possible if they were in Devastator? Unless they were not the same ones, and instead of turning into robots, only existed to form Devastator.
Bumblebee was a good character, save for his "best buds" relationship with Sam getting a little abrasive. His fight with Rampage and Ravage was cool. I wish we'd had more Sideswipe and he didn't have such an old sounding voice, as well as Sideways more or less getting NO screen time save for being cut in half by Sideswipe. Though, that's why I feel there were too many. I can't fault them for cutting their screen time back. Starscream was cool, and so was his interaction with Megatron.
Those who WERE there, did good.
So yeah, I have issues with the movie, but every movie has issues. I think it was really good. Still not entirely impressed with Shia LeBouf or Megan Fox (Acting wise), though she was the better of the two. Sam's parents were really good in this, I thought.
I didn't like The Fallen, piss poor character, and so was the whole Star Wars thing they had going on between him and Megatron. First off, Megatron being down on one knee; never. He bows to nobody, that didn't sit well with me. Secondly, I just didn't like The Fallen.
I'd say a 8.5/10, solidly. Possibly 9.
Overall, I think the hating needs to stop. It's not like a comic movie where there's a blatant history. There's a million different continuities in Transformers, and this is acceptably just another one. If I hear someone ***** about Prime not having flames, even still...I swear, I'll shank.
