Watchmen

How is it at all negative? Let me introduce myself: you can call me SpaceMonkey, Space, SM, whatever, and I am EXTREMELY neutral whenever I don't know squat about a subject. I liked the trailer, and I am intrigued, so I will watch the movie. Upon reading this entire thread on this movie, I happened to form an opinion. Now because I have no knowledge of the book, or the story, I was wondering if there was a reason alot of the posts here were so serious and heavy. If explained to me properly I might go get the book and read it before watching the movie. I gather that upon reading MY post you formed and opinion. You assumed I was trying to come off as negative, or a jerk, perhaps... which was never my intention, but, alas, I will accept your assumption, sir. Thank you.

Now, is there anything about this novel that makes it more than a normal or regular comic book or graphic novel?

Double post, sorry.

Bardock explained it.

It deals with subjects that were and are unheard of in the comics medium, unheard of in...well...I don't think there is any medium that has dealt with the same specific, intelligent, specialist and esoteric subjects. It's not just Batman.

One of the accolades of its reputation is that it cemented the comic book as legitimately serious literature.

I wasn't suggesting you were TRYING to be negative, it just seemed as though you were suggesting we couldn't possibly be justified.

"Why can't it be like any other comic book?", if this is a question you have in mind, read the book first.

Cool. I will definitely be picking it up. Thanks.

Everyone should read Watchmen

... though keep in mind the comic was written in the 80's (around '86) and much of the things discuss (themes) and twists may not seen so relevant or shocking nowadays, but that's because Watchmen has been influential in many other medias, and many have used similar themes and twists (if not used the exact same ones)....

Watchmen is an entirely relevant novel today, what are you talking about?

Presumabely he was referring to the stuff dealing with the Vietnam War and the Watergate thing. Those do date the novel somewhat, though that never really bothered me when I read it.

They don't date the novel just because it's set in the past.

It would be dated if it didn't apply to, or wasn't relevant to, the modern times.

I wasn't refering to that, just that if new readers reads the novel now, they might find some of the themes irrelevant, as well as some characters personalities and twists not as shocking or intriguing nowadays, but that's because there's been so many other medias (shows, movies, comics) inspired by Watchmen and even used some of those themes or plots devices... (Heroes comes to mind... even The Incredibles)

BTW: I never said it was Irrelevant, just that to some, it may not seen so relevant

Yeah, and there's a reason those people don't or haven't read Watchmen.

Not all of this is coincidence.

You do realise you used the word irrelevant in your first sentence, then in your last denied having done so... right? 😕

He is trying to say that he doesn't feel the themes are irrelevant, but some might.

Those people are quite stupid.

Watchmen is so good, I really hope this movie does it justice.

Thought this was interesting, Kevin Smith apparently got to see Watchmen and loved it: http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/08/15/kevin-smith-has-seen-watchmen-its-fking-astounding/

Also, Zack Snyder had this to say about the running time:
“I want to make the best movie I can. I want to put pressure on myself as a filmmaker and say, “What’s the coolest movie?” And if the coolest movie is 3-hours long then that’s the coolest movie. I understand and respect my partners at Warner Bros. I want them to have financial success with the film. You know, when you look at it that way, they invested a lot of money into it, they want it to be good. But on the other hand, I would tell them that I think the very things they think are too long, or too violent, or too sexy are the very reasons to go to the movie.”

And as a side-note, he had this to say:
“[The graphic novel] is #1 or #2 on Amazon right now, and that’s awesome. I think that if in the end the movie is a 3-hour advertisement for the book, then so be it. I succeeded.”

It won't do Watchmen justice, why are people not accepting that?

It possibly being a good movie does not mean it has done the book justice. It will not do the book justice, it's impossible.

People are confusing "Movie might be good." with "Movie might do the book justice.".

Also, the fact that I can almost feel the rape of this amazing piece of work is sickening. I can actually sense everyone getting their avatars and sigs ready, it's horrid.

I reserved my opinion until I see the movie. There's a quite a lot of potential for a good film, not a faithful adaptation perhaps, but a good movie nonetheless.

as of now, it is inevitable, the movie will come out, and it has to appeal to both fans and newcomers (sadly), so I hope they didn't dumb it down too much.

I'm actually re-reading Watchmen, there's lot of cinematics frames in it, but most would take a lot time in a movie, while other tell so much in just one frame.
I'm not against it, but I'm not so eager about either, it just that I'm curious how they try to pull it off, that's the main reason I'm seeing it once it opens... just curiosity

B) Alan Moore isn't a cockney. He lives in Northampton.
C) Oh dear, oh dear... 🙄
