Swine Flu

I'm totally going to use that the next time someone says people have more than 5 senses.

to coin a phrase, this is a "neurons-eye-view" sort of thing.

Someone could radically redefine what "sense" is, and suddenly something like hunger or balance (imho not senses because they are not using information from outside of the body) are senses. My counterpoint is that all definitions are anthropic, and such a loose definition of `sense` is essentially useless, unless the level of explanation someone wants is of the most superficial nature.

lol, I guess that is the verbose way of saying `philosophers might disagree`

It was the CDC's idea actually. They determined that calling the disease swine flu is "dangerous to pigs".

Douglas Adams beat you to that revelation 😛

unless you are being pretentious and trying to define each touch receptor as a different "sense", the human body has about 4 senses, as taste and smell are pretty much the same thing.

Somatosensory, visual, olfactory and auditory.

How else do you propose information about the outside world enters the brain?

I'd argue that taste and smell are still different enough to be considered separate, as there are some things you can smell, but definitely cannot taste, eg that eggish smell they add to propane.

Then again, my friend (who has the worst ass-smells on the planet) once farted in my car and I swear I could literally taste shit in my mouth. Absolutely horrendous.

So really, I'm torn on the 4 or 5 senses.

I said natural defenses: ones that you are born with via evolution.

My bad, I didn't know that you were using "natural defenses" to mean something stupid.

Your additional logic is flawed as well. We are also born with the genetics to "evolve" new ways of fighting off disease. Or is the ability to make new antibodies an artificial construct not genetically accounted for and not evolutionary in origin?

Nice try, bub, but you can't just make shit up after the fact to try to be right because you're still wrong. You have to know what you're talking about before you start talking about it.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, something that would not commonly be referred to as "natural defenses" would be antibiotics.

If you want to REALLY get pedantic, sure, there are loads of senses. Obviously, I was not referring to the "primary four" receptor categories. The fact that he, XYZ, was aware that there are other, more specific ways, to categorize the senses, implies he has a knowledge of human physiology that isn't common knowledge. To go off on a tangent like this is to miss that specific point in my post. Just so you don't think I am being like XYZ and making shit up on the fly, I can point you to the thread that he made a post about it...and my reply was similar to yours, I believe. I've got to go to work. I'll find it and post the results.

It would appear that I was half correct:

Here's why I'm half right: later on in the thread, I did NOT interject that the number of senses is variable based on perspective. However, I think it borderline common knowledge and assumed I interjected with info, but it was you who did that. 🙁 It's possible that I agreed with you so strongly that I when I recalled that post of XYZ's, I automatically filled in the "gap" with posts of yours that I agreed with.

You know so little about so much, don't you?

Well, then you should freak out about the non-swine flu instead, way, way, way more children dying of that.

I know, and I do.

So why do you not care about children dying from Swine Flu?

Why don't you think Swine Flu is important, since it's a potential killer, and we're not talking small numbers here. The last outbreak in the 20s killed about 40 thousand in the US.

Also, why do you feel the media's coverage on this issue to be more important than the actual health of your fellow man?

I understand the media is a dick, but we're talking about health of the population here.

Stupid pigs need to be extinct. We don't need them anymore. I'm tired of bacon anyways.

There are no natural defenses against Swine Flu. My reasons are the same as before.

Man, you're retarded.

Oh wait, you actually are.

Fair enough, I'll let you win this argument, not like it means anything.

Because so far it has shown to be incredibly harmless, yeah, maybe it has potential. But you know what actually kills 40 thousand a year in the US? The non-swine flu. Lets focus our energy on exterminating this. And lets just keep half an eye on that swine flu "problem" that has so far killed less than 0.00000033% of people.

It is related. If the media would rather focus on AIDS, Malaria, Cancer, Starvation, etc or even just half as much, the funding and targeting of actually dangerous diseases and problems would be increased mannifold thereby saving so, so, soo many more.

So I wonder, why don't you care more for the health of your fellow men?

How about you argue your dumbass of an idea with a pathologist? I wonder who they would agree with...hmm (That last one is rhetorical.)

And calling me retarded (though it probably makes you feel better, just slightly) doesn't change the fact that you are wrong. 😬

OMG SERIOUSLY?

I had no ****ing idea!!

By the way, sarcasm.

It has potential to kill loads, and personally I resent your tone.

The media does tackle those. How many times have you seen an ad on all those things you've mentioned on tele, the streets, on trains/busses, in trains/busses?

This is a pretty big error for you, to ignore all those adverts would be like ignoring the pebbles on an average beach.

You may as well change your name from dadudemon to moronic bacon lover. Don't be flipping at me because I dislike bacon. What I like and don't like is none of your friggin buisness.

You don't have a very defining mark between joking and seriousness.

3 times maybe? Anyways, way worse killers than Swine Flu.

That...might just be the most ridiculous analogy I've ever heard.

Either way, the major issue from my point of view here is hysteria rather than a dangerous disease, cause it doesn't seem that bad. And all that crying wolf really doesn't help all that much.
