Flu is different every year (assuming you don't ascribe to various conspiracy theories) so there is no typical flu. It's usually possible to get the current flu vaccine from a doctor.

Tamilfu is a general antiviral drug for once you have flu. It works reasonably well but it's not great. The genetic mapping is neccessary to create the most effective vaccines and antiviral medications.

It's not just with flu viruses that scientists are doing this though. Most diseases are now being targetted at the specific genetic level. Drugs are being developed to target specific types of certain cancers...Anything really.
