For one, it wasn't retard action scene after retard action scene.
You don't see a majority group of people treating a smaller group of people like they're animals because of differences as a clear point on "social injustice"? It's still an action Sci-Fi, it also delivered in that area too.
Considering this movie had a point besides action and flash, it automatically is smarter than Origins and GI Joe, by default, regardless of it turning into an action flick at the end.
Iron Man wasn't the first movie to use something like that.
Seems you built yourself up REALLY high on this movie to be something particular and it wasn't. Doesn't mean it's a bad movie on those grounds. Might as well go into The Hangover expecting a Sci-Fi action, then dissing the movie because it failed to meet that criteria.
Don't get me wrong, you're free to hate this movie, as this is all opinions and preferences, but it seems you're hating it for very trivial reasons, the accents, the video displays etc.

Yeah. This seems to be what FotN's problem with the film was.
I haven't seen it yet, so I will hold off on any real criticisms of the film or what FotN had to say. Who knows, I may agree with him.

I think you'll enjoy it. Sure you'll notice the cheese, silliness and lacking parts (namely not delving deeper into why the aliens came to Earth and why they were initially stuck), but overall, it's a solid Sci-Fi with a social message.

From what I've read, there is a lot more to this movie; the director just had to cut and slash it for allotted time, I'm hoping an extended version fills in where I found it lacking most. The whys and hows of the aliens.

and rob i disagree personally. ive always liked ambiguity in movies. i feel that in this case the lack of a reason for their appearing on earth made them more mysterious in both the audience (our eyes) and in the eyes of the people in the movies.
i liked cloverfield for the same reason. it was actually my favorite movie of '08.

And, to use Star Trek, I think the aliens came here because this was the nearest Class M planet near them at the time. They figured on bunkering down until they could figure out what to do to get going again.

I don't mind movies that don't explain every detail and leave it open-ended for the viewer, but the clear flaws (which I won't list as not to spoil) ruin that aspect here.
Cloverfield is a good example, never really tells us where the creature came from, or if it even was alien to this planet; that's fine though, as we don't really need to know for the story's sake.

I completely disagree with you 'missing moments' and 'plot points' opinion, because I thought the plot made total sense, and by only adding ounces of the mythology were we able to be in suspense and excitement after each frame.
To me, this is easily one of the best movies of the year. I totally called it, too, but even then I didn't expect that. Nothing but insanity, balls-to-the-wall action, and great characters. Easily a 5/5.

They were trashpickers and were taken advantage of by a lesser kind? It didn't fit. And the humanoid/roach look didn't do anything for me.

the only cool thing about this movie was the way those soldiers of fortune kept getting wholly obliterated. that's it. otherwise they movie was one stupedous bore. I had to struggle to stay up in some parts.
I give this movie a 2/10. the lowest score i've ever giver a film.

Them not delving deeper into the whys and hows is forgiveable, though something I hope they get deeper into if there's an extended version.
But the obvious flaw in them being stuck here(considering what we see as the story progresses), is just that, a flaw in the movie. Does it ruin it? No.
Wouldn't give it 5/5. but like I said initially, one of the better Sci-Fi I've seen in a long time, and as BF said, "solid movie", overall.

Spoiler:1)The 20 years for Christopher to collect fuel to operate the smaller ship, when the pieces of technology he scavenged the fuel from would have originally been on the ship.
2) The mother ship was operational all along. As Christopher fired it up via remote control.
3) Christopher could have left before he gathered that last drop, ie before Vikus confiscated it and sprayed a larger amount than that last scavenged drop on his face.
Now to be fair, we can possibly assume some mysteries and be fine with it.
1) Christopher said it was very difficult to make the required liquid, so he could have been on the ship trying to make enough, but humanity broke in before that happened. So I can excuse that for the sake of the story/suspension of belief.
2) The mother ship did in fact need the smaller ship to operate and that smaller ship has to have fuel to do so. Again, excusable as above.
3) There is no conceivable excuse as to why he didn't leave earlier. Recap: When Christopher would have had more fuel overall, before he collected the final drop, Vikus sprayed/wasted some and the time they got it back from MNU. This is the major flaw to Christopher not leaving.
I was slightly disappointed with the movie, but I think I went in expecting a different type of film.
I wanted more back story on the aliens. How they got there, why they are there, what their world is like, ect.
The movie seemed to sacrifice the plot in order to "get their message" across.

I hope their is a sequel though, I kind of was left at the end like.."Well..what the ****? Did Christopher come back in 3 years or what?"And didnt Christopher say he needed to save his people? Looked like to me he just jumped on the ship with his son and bounced lol left the rest behind. Decent movie, overrated in my mind though.
In other news Shutter Island looks insanely good, Law Abiding Citizen looks entertaining and that Woody Harrelson Zombie Movie looks HILARIOUS. I got some good previews before District 9 that's for sure.

true. the only thing i can really think could happen is that Christopher wanted some insurance. it would really suck ass for him to run out of fuel halfway there in space. that amount that was sprayed in the dudes face could have just been the emergency amount in case something went wrong hence why after it was sprayed in his face Christopher only had just enough to get to the planet.
