I know everyone is going to disagree with me but, the Michael Bay movies do not live up to the 80s cartoon. They suck...actually I have to admit I found the first one watchable. However, I do not like the designs, they look like trash piled up. I do like the story lines. The dialog is cheesy, cliche' and dumb. Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz from atthemoviestv.com gave the best review.

I'm the same in all categories. I took it a step further and read the comics, and continued to watch the various iterations of Transformers, too.

Also, what did you think a Transformer would REALLY look like in real life?

Do you honestly think that they would look like the simple design that we had from the 80s cartoon? That makes no sense in a live action movie. Do you realize how immature and childish that would look in live action?

I was a serious fan from the 1980's. I came home from school and watched it religiously at 4:30 every weekday. And I went to the animated movie many times over. The entire 80's era is the favourite one.
However, watching clips of the old series, it doesn't look as good to me anymore. Full of inconsistencies and childish storylines; and the 1986 movie isn't that watchable now, with that terrible soundtrack. I guess I've moved on, and now enjoy seeing the old ideas refreshed for the new live action movies.

hell its better then the recent cartoon they've done.

Definatley have to aggree with you there, a lot of the cartoons out now just suck they look like the power puff girls piece of crap. Maybe it costs to much to hire good japanese or korean artists? bring back visionaries, bionic six looking cartoons.

Ditto. I watched some clips of the old movie and it was pretty bad. Although I did find it incredibly funny when Optimus was just running down Decepticons in his truck form. But I still really like the concept and the majority of the characters. That part will always be good.

That's what I've been saying. Have you ever seen that clip of the white truck transforming into Optimus G1 style? It was cool and all, but it looked really goofy in a real world setting. The blocky designs really don't cut it for realism.

Shhhh. That type of logic would cause the minds of people like Ebert to blow up! Then who would idiots get their movie reviews from??!?!?!?!? (Cept you, TH. You is smart people. 😄 )

LOL.

And, no, I have not seen that transform thing you're referring to. Post a youtube link in here. That'd be neat to show others why their complaint about realization is rubbish...despite the logic pointing a clear conclusion.

Bardock, do you now see what I mean by "blankie syndrome"? Do you now see why I accuse so many of it and think that very few can think objectively about these things? Coupled with the "blankie syndrome" is group think or popular mentality influences as well.

Think about it: if the movies occured before the cartoons, comics, CG animations, etc., people would find the others to be rubbish. 😆

That model was of a G1 toy frame and transformation.

Stuff based since on Masterpiece Prime is where it is at.
Thats the stuff you could use in the movies.

The end result is the same. And the method is almost the same, too. I don't think a few extra rotating chest panels would convince me I'm looking at a member of an advanced robotic alien race. The original design is great, quite literally, on paper but in a real world setting it's like I'm looking at the man in the rubber godzilla suit. However, flip that situation around, try to pull the movie Optimus look in a cartoon and he'd probably look pretty awful.

They both work well in the comics though.

The stuff I saw worked better than that. Hell in the game there is even the option or mod to go G1 and the characters worked.

And unlike Bay's designs, you could make out who was who in a fast battle situation easily.

I'm not saying that the original designs would best fit the movie in a real world. What I'm saying is that the Bay's designs suck. They're a mess and ugly. However...maybe the original design would work in the real world...

They worked because the Transformers game was no more real looking than the giant robots romping around in it.

Until they dropped the dozen nameless decepticons, I had no trouble telling anyone apart. I only say that because I'm not sure if that one was Megatron or not.

Edit: That one doesn't look too bad. It's kind of a half way point. I could really go without every transformer have an intact front of a car for a chest though.

How was it Transformers 1.2? It definitely wasn't the same thing, completely different storyline, tons of new characters, and way better fights. Definitely not the same thing as the first one.

you're right. it was more like transformers 0.1

ok i'll have to admit that the fights were little better cause the were a little more stylish but they were still that same kinda crap. They were just a bit longer and the enemies died kinda violently.

the storyline was worse that pt. 1's story line, though. i dozed off at times cause of it.

the humor was atrocious. fcukin' atrocious. the mom was just mad annoying. practically everyone in the movie was annoying. the moms looks like she was trying hard to be hilariously funny and failed. she was a little funny in part one but she kept forcing it in this one.

And i didn't like megatron having a master. not use to that. and a robo-heaven?, lol c'mon, man.

and where did Optimus get all this super fighting power. He owned all surprisingly. i wish he was like that in part one, where he got pwned hard.

the movie blew hard, for me at least. the 2 ghetto robots were the worst. i felt myself getting dumber and dumber for every second their clumsy arses spoke with their mid-90's ebonics.

and wtf was up wit jet-fire. i thought he'd be the baddest arse of em all when that stealth bomber started to transform and it turn out to be a cranky old man transformer with a beard and a fcukin' cane! lmao!

nah. the movie sucked in my opinion, man.

i should've listened to my gut initially and not seen it.

I don't understand this thing about a "mass of metal" is about.

At no point could I NOT tell who was who in the first or the second film. In never crossed my mind that I couldn't tell who was who.

On another note, this may be unfair as I play video games quite a bit...so my eyes may not be old and slow like Ebert's.

I think you just contradicted yourself there. I thought Bay's designs awsome. it shows how complex they are and i have no problem identifying who is who, provided they mentioned their names. 🙂
If they looked like the cartoon it would be bad just take a look at this.

First - I was being sarcastic. You would've known that, but the horrible Bay's design must have messed with your brain. It's ok if that happened, it not your fault Bay's design are very befuddling and memorizing. They must have put you in a hypnotic state, it's all part of a master plan... hypnotize the audience with the first movie to make them believe that it was good and that they should the sequel. Evil Genius Michael Bay strikes again!

Second - That youtube video although was funny, was ridiculous.

watched this on sunday... found it to be totally disapointing. well i knew it was gonna be a let dowb but not this much. the first transformers movie was quite good, right up to the optimus / megatron fight. megatron basically owned him and made optimus look like a total wimp. the fight was too one sided and made optimus look ridiculously weak compared to megatron. here are a few major flaws in this movie (in my opinion at least)

enter transformers 2, where:

1. the optimus / megatron match up swings in the completely opposite direction ..... now optimus totally owns megatron, quite easily while owning 2 other decepticons simultaneously...... erm ye, when did this shift of power happen exactly.

2. i thought bumblebee could talk at the end of the first movie....... obviously bay couldn't think of sticking to the storyline as bumblebee using the radio to communicate is alot cuter than him speaking... this was both inconsistent and lame.

3. the character "the fallen" refers to megatron as his "apprentice" ... did bay decide that the star wars master/apprentice dialogue was so cool that he just had to slot it into his movie?

4. the hot aussie babe doing a terminator 3 impersonation was quite shameless... once again did bay think terminator was such a cool concept he just had to immitate the franchise here?

5. the cheesy lines "i'm too old for this" ... "let's rock" .... "i'll take you all on" ... "that dude is an A-HOLE!" "<enter cliche' american phrase here>" .... i understand one or two but bay used every single oppertunity to say something cheesy.

6. the whole "only a prime can defeat the fallen" ..... erm says? why is that? so now robots have family trees and surnames? erm. . ... ...... how is he their descendant?

7. the auto bots have such limited screen time it's sad.... bumblebee, iron-hide etc. are such cool characters yet far too little time is spent on them

8. the "ghetto" robots.... one with a gold tooth.... why did bay feel the need to humanise all the robots in this film? they're robots fgs, they don't need to adopt totally human traits. ye and those two robots were really lame...

9. why did megan fox have to do the whole "i love you" thing before sam came back from the dead.... lame, no real place in the movie

10. why must the american army play such a big part in this film? at one stage the film consisted of the army radioing each other for what seemed an eternity!

there are plenty more reasons why this movie was a major disapointment... the effects and transformations were excellent though. and i enjoyed a few of the fight scenes, especially the optimus fight (where he gets killed) ... this movie isn't a TOTAL waste of time, but still could have been MUCH better. too much hollywood here =/

I completely agree, with one exception. I do think transformers 2 was a waste of time. But other than that you hit it on the spot!

AH! My mind still must be numb from the endless explosions and the transformers that you never knew their names and they died anyway.

I think for the most part that the actual normal fans of the franchise and movie thought it sucked, while the hardcore nut bars loved it and others who know nothing about it loved it too.

That might be true.

Yeah I agree with that... well I'm done with post.

I think the shift in power may have come from Optimus having 2 years to sharpen his fighting skills and also fighting in a forest instead of a populated city.
