Eventually, your journey away from the village carries you into the foothills at the base of Utu Malakui, the mountains from the map. The fog is less thick as you ascend into the mountains, so you can see better that the mountains are not as sturdy as they appeared to be. In fact, it appears that they are a collection of narrow spires that rise up to a central mountainous rock- a fascinating natural formation.
Where you are now, the rocks are flat and wide and easy to cross. Once they start becoming narrow, it will be more difficult to traverse.
You do find a sign that you are going the right way, though- there is a stick wedge into the rocks that has been intricately carved.
