Tournament Discussion Thread

What if there was a tournament in which contestants drafted characters, but only from specific creator runs? For example, I could draft Superman (Jeph Loeb) and someone else could draft Superman (Kurt Busiek). Obviously, they'd be a power cap, and you couldn't draft the same character twice (though a specific character could be drafted by multiple entries provided they used a different writer).

Policing that would be difficult, Jake. There's only a handful of people that could readily identify issues for most characters. It would also be weighted towards characters who have only had 1-2 writers for long stretches. The latter isn't a big issue, but from a judging and hosting standpoint, the first would be imo. Interesting idea though.

A lot of readers don't pay too much attention to the writers name from issue to issue, I could never enter this kind of tourney, wouldn't know which feats I could use or not.

Good points, guys.

Okay, after some long thought, and the realization that I really do have a lot of time on my hands, I've decided that I will definitely be willing to host and judge a tournament. What kind of tourny, I'm not sure yet. I'd like to have a turn out similar to the one I participated in in Kahn's and Batdude's tourny, so I'm really open to suggestions. I'll make a separate thread soon to try and get a pulse for what kind of theme the majority of the board would be into or whether it would be single participants or teams.

hmmmm. I'm not going to voice my opinion on what kind of tournament I want, since I really don't have the time to compete, but I do have this one combination I've been wanting to try out for a while now.

If the tournament that gets formed allows me to make the combination, I may be tempted to join in.

Either way, glad someone is deciding to host one. And I think Jake is a good guy, so I'm glad it's not someone like Evangel94 (god was she annoying).

I just want one if these things to finish

posted this in the wrong thread last night:

Why not a non Vs tourney? More of a team, scenario based, tourney with a points system?

select a team of maybe five characters, the host will have a series of tasks to accomplish:

- save the girl, defeat an enemy, survive against an invasion, inifiltrate the pentagon, defeat hostage takers with no loss of life, whatever...

limit of one submission post per scenario, all sent to the host, all posted by host at same time, to deter copying of ideas.

The points will be awarded depending on judges votes on plausability, style, time taken, collateral damage, damage taken by team, whatever.

first - ten points
second - eight
third - seven
etc, etc...depending on number of entrants.

Have five to ten rounds of varied tasks, winner is the poster with the highest score at the end.

Standard gear, limited prep [planning only, no tech creation or obscure object collection], characters assumed to play nice with each other

Late submissions can cause point deductions or round by round DQs to keep things moving in a timely fashion.

Just of the top of my head. I would be interested in something like this, but don't have time to host. At one post per round/task I may be able to compete.

Makes a change from straight up "my guy can kill your guy" tourneys [that seem to be losing interest anyway]

What do you guys think?

Here's my tentative idea.

The tournament would be set up with three characters: The first character would be capped at Mid/High Meta (thinking Invisible Woman as a rough gauge). The second character would be capped at Mid Herald (Captain Marvel/Billy Batson would be around the upper limit in my view).

The third character is where things get interesting. The cap is High Herald, but unlike the first two characters, the third character does not actively fight in the matches. Instead, the third character will be the one whom contestants will use for their resources and prepping capability (prep time and rules involving prep to be elaborated on in the future). This character can contribute equipment, strategy, synching, amping, etc during the allotted prep time, effectively serving as a tactician/buffer for the team.

I'll also be rewarding TBA perks/bonuses for theme based teams, ie. teams who share a common connection with one another. The more unique the theme, the bigger the bonus would be (more than likely more prep time). A generic keyword could be "scientist" or "time traveler" or "martial artist". A more unique keyword could be "Avengers", "Justice League", or "X-Men".

In addition to battling the opponent, contestants will also have a specific crisis/challenge to deal with in each round, typically a "boss" that seeks to best both teams. Contestants will have to not only beat the other team, but also defeat or incapacitate the enemy. Each round will get progressively more difficult, in which case I'm leaning towards allowing an additional draft pick each round. By the time of the finals, I expect to see actual teams (not counting the tactician) will be bumped up to five characters.

Anyway, that's my general thoughts of the tourny I'd be hosting.

Any thoughts?

It sounds pretty interesting. Sounds like a big time commitment, but I'd be interested if this thing got rolling.

Scoob's idea sounds cool too. It would be a total twist on normal tournies and sounds like it would be more fun for a potential host. I'm pretty much down for whatever though.

I'm thinking we could probably combine my idea and Scoobs. Each battle would be a typical "team on team" confrontation, but there's also a challenge/obstacle to overcome. You could theoretically overpower your opponent's team (if you make a good case to the judges of course), but if you can't also deal with Ultron, then you might be S.O.L.

Personally, I really like the idea of adding more characters as the rounds progress so that it almost feels like a comic in of itself; the lower level guys come across some grave threat and soon the big guns get involved until the climatic battle. It would be half RPing/half debating, if done right.

Soon as this tourny is over I will host a herald level tourny over at the Authority forum.

I'll send the link to the website once we have everything ready.

As always, I'm down to judge/advise.

I would be down with that.

Journey to Mystery Thor FTW

😆

I'm thinking a tournament of 3 low level characters (street level) and one at/under spider-man level, with prep time prior to the match but only one character can be used for a match.

it would be an enhancement type of theme where you could try to amp one of your characters as best you can through various means.

another one could be a Spider-man/batman rogue's gallery tournament

you get to pick 2-3 of their rogues with a day's preparation time and get to utilize standard technologies as well as a handful of henchmen (if they tend to use them)

I like the Rogue's Gallery idea.

8 participants should be decent, and the (all 4 then the remaining 2) matches happen simultaneously so it moves quickly to the final showdown.

standard rules apply:

-no self battlefield removal or of your opponent(s)

-no direct mind/soul control, however controlling non-sentient tech/robots is fine

-no indefensible attacks, however that is a debatable offense, but 80% "no" against the rule break unless they can really justify otherwise

-etc/more to be decided
