Godzilla (2014)

Well um...

Spoiler:
This movie should be renamed "Godzilla-tease" because up until the finally we hardly get to see him. Heck even Heisenberg hardly had screen-time. Intead we're stuck with Kick-ass at a time where I couldn't care less about him. Also why was humanity so stupid. "Dur...small nuke don't work so make it bigger...derpity dur we're so smart"

I did like the Atomic Breath and the last fight scene but why was it so short? Also liked how Godzilla was portrayed as the good guy and stuff.

Overall it was fun but I personally think Pacific Rim was moreso(c'mon you know this comparison was going to be made)

Going to go so it tonight, glad to here its getting good reviews here in the states. In japan its getting the cold shoulder. The japanees are claiming it sucks and Godzilla is to fat.

Then again the japanees will not be happy with a Godzilla film unless Godzilla is a rubber suit and dancing like muhammand ali.

Agreed.

I enjoyed the film, but the screentime of Godzilla and the monster fights (

Spoiler:
and Bryan Cranston
) could have been more excessive IMO.

Here is my review of the film

I really enjoyed it a lot. A lot of people complain about Brody but I liked his character. He was understandably trying to race back to his family,

Spoiler:
the only family he had left
. There was a massive amount of build up to the creatures in this film, but I felt it was well worth it. The MUTOs had a real Cloverfield-like menace to them and they made for threatening villains whom you would not want to encounter IRL, and the reveal of Godzilla, with slow pan up to his face and then a mega-ROAR was awesome. I liked how they teased the Godzilla/MUTO fight by only having the kid see it on the screen. It made the actual fight all the more awesome. The final fight itself had a real Toho-like Monster Battle feel to it, with Godzilla being the underdog at times, which made his
Spoiler:
atomic breath reveal
all the more amazing. The way he dispatched the final monster was badass, as well as
Spoiler:
his heralded re-entry to the ocean depths
. He even gets dubbed KotM, which given the awesome shit he does in this film, is well-deserved.

I also enjoy Godzilla motives here

Spoiler:
when the male and female MUTOs "communicate", Godzilla "overhears" them, and begins hunting them down
. He's like a T-Rex Jack Bauer 🙂.

I loved the designs of the MUTOs and Godzilla. They were really, well, monstrous. And before I forget, I love the opening title sequence. One of the best and most imaginative I've seen in a while.

I do feel like they could have

Spoiler:
explored Cranston's storyline a little more
, but I didn't consider it a hindrance, and I was thoroughly engaged in Brody's attempts to reunite with his family.

The score was great. I love how when

Spoiler:
Godzilla went back into the sea
the music was very heroic.

The directing was great, although I did notice abundance of human POV shots, which again didn't serve as a hindrance, because they got enough good wide shots of the monsters and their duel. Besides, it was kind of nice projecting my mind into that of a kid on a schoolbus watching a 350 ft dinosaur rise in front of him. Speaking of which, that bus driver needs to be in MENSA.

All in all, great film. 8 out of 10. I can not determine yet whether I liked this better than Pacific Rim, but I think I may give Pacific Rim the edge due to more immediate entertainment without the need of lengthy build up, but then again, Pacific Rim is far less realistic. IDK for certain though.

Everyone's commenting on the slow reveal of Godzilla....

Has anyone seen the director's previous film, Monsters?

Small budget & more of a love story than a creature flick but the director knows how to pace the story & build the suspense.
Once again you don't see the monsters until 3/4 into the film & never once does it feel like a disappointment.

I watched Monsters on Netflix yesterday in preparation for this. Excellent

Spoiler:
and tragic
film. The slow build up was great in that as well.

Finally saw it tonight and loved it. The acting was actually pretty good, even though the slow build up to the monster scenes was there I think it actually made the final battles more exciting. Godzilla was absolutely WICKED looking minus the reptilian elephant feet he had rofl.

This was a darker version of a Godzilla movie then the previous ones but in this case it think it works better then the old style Godzilla we grew up with. As much as I loved the old Godzilla movies as a kid I just don't think the people theses days want to see Godzilla high fiveing angarius or break dancing on the screen theses days P.

This movie was better then I excpected.

Agreed. This was definitely a well-made film. 7.5-8/10 imo.

Definitely the EVENT movie of 2014.

I had ridiculously high expectations going into this film after the first two amazing trailers for it. While it wasn't quite as great as I had hoped for it to be, it still delivered IMHO.

I didn't mind the slow buildup because I was entertained throughout. For all the critique its getting for being "boring" it was quite fast-paced to me. Cranston ****ing delivers with the screentime he was given. Taylor-Johnson isn't as bad as people are making him out to be. It's just that he isn't close to being stand-out material. Was kinda disappointed with Wantanabe's performance.

PROS
-The monsters themselves were very intimidating and had presence to them.
-Slow-buildup was a unique approach and necessary for the climatic battle to have the impact that it did.
-Cinemaography was on point! The movie is visually a pleasure to look at. All of the set designs were gorgeous.
-Cranston completely carries his part of the film and does it well.
-It's rare that a film delivers with its climactic action sequence. This film nails it at the end where so many other blockbusters have failed or come up short.

CONS
-

Spoiler:
Cranston dying so early. WTF!

-
Spoiler:
I, too, didn't care for the decision in Hawaii to cut from the fight to show the kid watching it on tv. That was lame.

-Wouldn't have minded Godzilla being a little more threatening to the humans.

8/10.

I saw it on a huge screen without 3D. How was the 3D for those that saw this with it?

Oh, and this is definitely superior to Pacific Rim and Cloverfield.

I did notice that trailer shot of the Statue of Liberty and the military general giving the "I know you want to help" speech were not actually in the film. That HALO scene was amazing though.

Not good. TBH, 3D was the only thing which left a bad taste in my mouth watching this film.

But I guess that might be due to my hatred of 3D in general.

Edit: Your review summed up the movie nice and good.

Saw this last night and thought it was dope! I rather like the slow reveal personally. Too excessive would be too much like those syfy channel mock movies like "Atlantic Rim" or something lol.

Wantabe was hilarious! He had one face expression throughout the whole movie lol

Thanks for this awesome review, good sir.

In terms of comparing this to Pacific Rim, I feel that had a more interesting plot and concepts, a more immersible world, and more fleshed out and interesting characters. It's hard to compare visuals, because while Pacific Rim was far more extravagant (sure Godzilla flipped over some ships and took a nuke, but Gypsy Danger swung a ship like a bat and took a nuke underwater), the human POV shots and excellent wide shots made the viewing experience very realistic and enthralling. And of, course, there is a complete polar opposite tonal difference, whereas the PR Kaiju are alien invaders who wish to overtake Earth for world domination, the MUTOs and Godzilla are primordial titans who have been awakened after eons of slumber, and threaten humanity merely by existing, because they will take their rightful place as Earth's dominant species. Godzilla is a criticism of mankind's arrogance, whereas Pacific Rim is an optimistic look at mankind's ingenuity and hope.

Like I said, it all depends on what you want out of the film. If you want a more realistic look at a monster battle and it's aftermath Godzilla would be preferable, but if you want a more imaginative and immersible world with monster battles, Pacific Rim is preferable. I like both, so that's why I'm torn. Both were blockbuster Demille-like spectacles which entertained the shit out of me in the theater. No reason not to like them both the same 🙂

There is one thing I have to know about the movie from anyone who has seen it. I have not but I read a review that said this is what happens and I have to know

The reviewer said that at the end of the movie

Spoiler:
Godzilla leaves and everyone cheers and claps for him. The people even wave goodbye...

Spoiler:
This is the "heralded" return to the sea I was speaking of. I can't recall any exact cheers, but it was made abundantly clear by a television news broadcast that said "Godzilla: King of the Monsters, or Savior of Our City"? TBF, if people can call Kal a hero after the damage to Metropolis in MOS, and I'm sure they'll give Godzilla a pass, because he saves their asses several times in this. They even accompany him via aircraft carriers to the final boss fight
