Yep. The news even calls him

Spoiler:
"King of the Monsters" and "Savior of our City?"

Edit:

Spoiler:
They do cheer for him. But the people who are cheering are far away from him and watching the news...

This is the "heralded" return to the sea I was speaking of. I can't recall any exact cheers, but it was made abundantly clear by a television news broadcast that said "Godzilla: King of the Monsters, or Savior of Our City"? TBF, if people can call Kal a hero after the damage to Metropolis in MOS, and I'm sure they'll give Godzilla a pass, because he saves their asses several times in this. They even accompany him via aircraft carriers to the final boss fight

Ooh ok thanks guys. It just sounded kinda cheezy thats why I wanted to know lol. I still really want to see the movie though.

Also, while the action in this is great, I still think MOS has this and Pacific Rim beat out for best action sequences. Not script, but action.

I join the chorus of people who loved the ending, I almost clapped at the screen to it because it was sooooo fulfilling after... Well, whatever spectations of mine were trampled here and before.

This was a very good and enjoyable film, definitively catches on the Toho vibe, I just wish it reached the Pacific Rim level of awesomness, but the climactic battle of this film remains the superior take on the kaiju beatdown. PR had a bit too much Anime influence, here Godzilla was more brutal and animalistic, which made wonders for the character.

Watanabe made me laugh, his character felt very odd on screen, some of the most dramatic moments of the films felt out of place (probably because of the dialogue). The campiest technobabble was funny too, but it was a good throwback to the kaiju genre without becoming flimsical like in Pacific Rim.

I'd definitively watch it again and I'll be getting the DVD. Just after watching it I realized how scared I was of it sucking big ballz.

just got back from seeing this..

Godzilla is a fun, thrill ride...

i liked it a whole lot and seeing it again next saturday when i take one of my nephews to see it

How old are your nephews, Mark?

It was a good movie, indeed.

one nephew is 26. the other is 15

for the sequel i wanna see King Ghidorah and/or Rhodan

plus a cameo by Mothra

I've grown up watching the Godzilla movies since I was six years old and it hurts me when I say the 2014 Godzilla sucks. Makes the 1998 one rewatchable. I went there 😐

There's not as much monster action as I anticipated. Even by the end, it seemed like there was barely anything going on and when they do show the monsters, the next scene goes to the humans while Godzilla fights in the conspicuous smoke in the background. Pay to see your childhood memory fight to the death only you won't actually see it but rather a couple soldiers do Call of Duty shit.

Americans drag their conversation scenes, taking even longer than the Japanese and that is an achievement. Literally felt like the day went by and it was already tomorrow.

Godzilla makes way less appearances than in the 1954 movie. I've seen more scenes of Gamera in Gamera vs. Barugon in comparison and that is sad.

Oh and I also love the part with the news

Spoiler:
calling Godzilla the "Savior of Mankind". Ignore the fact he sent a couple Navy ships flying and mowed through a bridge full of soldiers with some kids in a few school buses that didn't cross in time but at least he killed those mangy giant bats, right? Automatic hero.

this sums up the comparison for me perfectly. I'm probably in the minority here as i prefer Godzilla's realism (in a manner of speaking) to PR's very extravagant approach. enjoyed both, tho.

i may be looking too deep into it but i swear there was a foreshadowing to Mothra in the first act.

King Ghidorah, FTW.

Yeahno. They put more attitude in his establishing shot than Abrams did with King Kong throughout the entirety of that film. Nothing 'dragged on' through dialogue considering half of what they were explaining or doing was being done ALONGSIDE the main problem at hand, as well as building on itself far more consistently instead of just throwing everything it had at each corner.

And if this is the film where you're going to start trying to say that last complaint is valid, I don't want to know what you thought of Man of Steel or any Transformers movie, especially considering both parts of what you just said were hardly if at all blatantly indicative of causing the kind of casualties you're assuming compared to him just being there when the

Spoiler:
MUTOs' EMP took effect. The damn question mark at the end of the statement was indication enough that it was meant to be a matter of debate considering it's and explicitly stated anti-hero in question here.

It was just a little easter egg. Anyway, can't see them doing Mothra considering we already have a giant flying bug. I'm hoping for Ghidorah.

I went WAY overboard when I said I'd rewatch the 1998 version but I stick to my opinion this Godzilla is one of my least favorite. I thought the buildup to him showing up later in the film was cool but it didn't seem he did a whole lot after that.

That is true. a Legendary Picture update of KG would be an awesome sight.

And i thought Peter Jackson did King Kong?

damn skippy

Movie was okay. Not enough of the big guy for my taste. The new monsters are a good addition to the franchise. The main character was boring, and it felt like Armageddon with Batfleck at times. How many times can a certain someone cross path with these Kaiju and not die? Was this person carrying around a rabbits foot or was it really Michael Bay who directed this film?

Fight should have been in daylight, it's hard to see those night fights.

Zilla 1998 has never been an unwatchable movie, its just that the campiness goes way too far and it's simply not a Godzilla movie. This one has Godzilla, barely, but the character still manages to be Goji when he's on screen, they make it count in the few appearances it has.

The night battle complaints and the dialogue at times are actual issues, but I don't necessarily think they outweight the good.

😕

This was pretty much the exact opposite of a Bay film...

Spoiler:
The main climactic battle did begin in the day time. This isn't a big deal. You could see the creatures fine. Besides, having the battle at night made the atomic breath more visually appealing.
