lightsabers can sever entire appendages, and cauterize them in the process... they can slice through battle droids like a hot knife through butter... they can slag blast-proof doors like nothing, etc.
so if a lightsaber is that hot, how in the hell can it be brought within inches of someone's face without melting them? I understand that the heat element is only supposed to activate when the saber contacts something solid, but still...
