Because its not very popular here, and historically we suck. The US rugby team is even worse than the soccer team, and for the same reasons.
If the Indianapolis Colts played an American football game against a team from...say, India, and lost, that would be a little out-of-the-ordinary. It's even called American football.
Soccer, rugby, cricket; these aren't American sports.
With more and more soccor moms other there with this gens kids and the next, US will do great in years to come. This gen and the next are building a good foundation for our new sport soccor. Sports like football and hockey will because they are too violent.

football is an international sport, even if the national team of a given country isn´t that good on the world stage, football is still played in parks, beaches etc world wide.
When you think about it the USA really need this sport. I mean look at what daft sports they play.
# American Football :- a slower, complicated boring version of rugby with padding to stop thee gentle ones getting hurt.
# Baseball :- a girls game. Based on "rounders" what the girls play in English schools whilse the boys play football.
# Basket ball :- a girls game. Based on "netball" what the girls play in English schools whilse the boys play football.
now that is what you call fishing, if you want to do something do it right🙂
Netball is based on basketball, not the other way around, and involves some of the greatest athletes in the world. Have any football player tell Shaq he's playing a girls game and see what happens.
American Football involves entirely different hits from rugby, therefore there's a need for pads. If you haven't played both, don't try to make judgments on them.

Anyway, to get back to the US football thing. Just getting more and more practicioners won't get you anywhere. You need expertise in your league, not only European players like Beckham, I'm talking about coaches, scouts, technical directors, hell, even TV analists. You can either hire a shit load of Europeans and South Americans right now, or you wait for years until the American game has fully developed.
Either way, the US league definitely won't be equal to European leagues for years and the US team is up with minor European teams right now, with the ability the upset a few bigger ones. It'll take a while before they become a top team though.

Considering that most european countries have been trying to win the world cup and been considered good for the best part of the 20th centurty and then looking at the states and how much they have improved over the last 15 years is amazing imo. The americans should be considered one of the great soccer/football countries to be reckoned with tbh. Hell their recent statistics are drasticly better then that of England, Scotland, Denmark etc. They beat spain last year when no other team even came close to touching them.

I think it will be a long time before the US can be counted as one of the football greats.
Besides when it comes to European countries that have been considered great I can only think of two that have never won the World Cup. The Netherlands and Spain. Maybe Czech Republic when you count the Czechoslovakian years. Portugal have only been that great during the last decade and during the 60's, just like Poland was great in the 70's and 80's and Romania during the 90's.
