Character going "apeshit" when a friend dies. Is a common trait to characters, especially in mangas.
Besides that, Luffy has yet to have a Dead Friend. Only a dead family member. He goes apeshit for several different reasons

Luffy does not convert enemies in to friends. He defeats them

He converted nico robin

And to a lesser extent Cp9 and Crocodile

Also Vegeta's conversion was a long one with lots of stumbles and backslides. Vegeta was still rivals with Goku even as late as the Buu saga.
