Polanski's 'victim' & her family haven't wanted to pursue this since the 1970's. There was an agreed plea bargain, before the the Judge got a bug up his rear about this deal and decided to throw everything at Polanski, who fled the country before he could do it. That's why he has so many supporters.
And perspective might play into this. As long as I've been aware of Polanski, I've been aware of this hanging around behind him. It's not like watching somebody falling from grace & disintegrating in front of you, as I've witnessed with Mel Gibson.
So if it's proven he did assault Oksana with the upcoming testimony from her dentist and her young son, would that sway you?

in addition to sym and rough rider's points, it is worth mentioning that many black people are against the casual use of ******. I wouldn't say the majority, but it isn't correct to say that black people say it and it is ok

This newstory reads like a rerun of the story two months ago where a girl seeing an exec was paid to record a private conversation between the two of them. The tape was played on CNN. The man was forced to resign for venting off duty and in private.
About 4 months ago The F1 Chairman was run out of office when a woman took cash from an unscrupulous newspaper to set up an orgy and film it with a hidden camera. I can't remember the exact details, but the newspaper ran headlines claiming he was racist and had a nazi sex fetish. The paper was fined and ordered to pay damages for libel and publish an apology after they were challenged and taken to court.

No, the reality is that people just don't know what the "freedom of speech" we're granted actually entails. Freedom of Speech doesn't mean that you can say whatever you want whenever you want wherever you want, which is what a lot of people seem to think it means.
