dunno why it would be a surprise, or why you'd have a problem with benders being better (more informed or skilled) than benders were 100 years ago. Hell, 100 years ago irl breaking the 10 second mark in the 100 yard dash was considered an amazing feat, now it's pretty much the norm.
It's only natural for the current generation to be greater than the last due to access to information, technology and genetics.
Im not surprised, just a little upset. Those attacks used to be something "special" if you know what I mean, they aren't any more. You had to be a firebending master, now some z list mobster does it with ease... Wonder if bloodbending is a norm too. Im sure Katara kept it a secret all these years, but maybe other benders figured it out.

Look at what Korra's age was when she found out she was the Avatar. She knew how to Earthbend & Firebend at the age of 5.
Now that Firebending is less about pure rage and more about what the Dragons taught, I think it's easier for most Firebenders to learn how to create Lightning, especially since the information is likely easily available.
Toph started teaching her Metalbending a year after the War ended, to whoever could afford it.
As for Bloodbending, can't tell. If Hama could figure it out, someone else can. Though I doubt Katara would teach anyone how to bloodbend.
Benders from the original series are still much more impressive though. Then again, we've only had 3 episodes of the new series.

As far as Bloodbending goes, Hama only figured it out because she was in prison and discovered out of a sense of necessity. She never would have if she hadn't been put in jail.
Right, but with advances in Biology (i.e. the knowledge that Water is the most abundant substance in the Human Body), as well as the knowledge that the Water Bending gets enhanced during the Full Moon, someone should be able to make the discovery.

u think Korra's gonna go Avatar state during that confrontation with Amon?
Has to go into it sometime. She still has to master the state no doubt.
Maybe Amon will take away Korra's bending and they will fight h2h? Because avatar state vs barehanded fighter wont make for an interesting final battle.
Now that i think About it i doubt he is a strictly MA character. The final fight HAS to be flashy with lots of fire, explosions etc so i bet Amon hasnt reveled his full abilities yet. Could be he is not just taking benders powers away but stealing them for himself? And Planning to remain the only bender in the world? Im speculating ofcourse but its possible...
