Yeah. Though he should have known Aang could possibly possess the ability to redirect it, what with Zuko declaring his intentions of training Aang to Ozai.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't addressed in the show's cannon, but has it ever been shown/stated that the Avatar can do the more advanced aspects of bending? For example, generating lightning or blue flame from firebenders, bloodbending from water benders, or metal bending from earthbenders (air doesn't have one, as of yet, correct?).

There's no reason they shouldn't be able to. A true Avatar is a master of all four elements, and if they find out about or are trained in that higher tier of bending, they can perform. Korra can't as of yet, but Aang for example figured out how to use Toph's earth sense since he's essentially connected to the planet itself, and he learned how to metalbend. Even the Republic City police can metal bend and regular factory worker fire benders provide the city with electrical power. If they can do it, the Avatar definitely can. And no, as of yet Airbending doesn't have a higher tier. Well it more than likely does, but as Airbenders are pacifist, they haven't or haven't tried to discover it.

It hasn't been shown or stated that the Avatar could perform the 'advanced' aspects of Bending. Aang, for instance, never showed the ability to generate Lightning or Blue Fire, redirect Heat, Heal, or bend 'Blood'/Plants/Sand/Metal. That doesn't mean they cannot though. It should be well within their power to do everything, except perhaps use Blue Fire, which so far seems to be unique to Azula and the Dragons, and Combustion, which seems to be unique to SSBM.
Avatars are capable of bending Lava though, something no other regular bender can do.
