Before Morrison reinvented them in Final Crisis the New Gods were either portrayed as Gods in the vein of Zeus or Ares or as superpowered aliens. ^I remember that. It's a pretty good retcon story wise but pisses all over battle boards. Basically every time we've seen the New Gods, their different incarnations than other showings. Hence why Orion is a strategist in one appearance, and a blood thirsty maniac in another. The New Gods that we've seen are basically minuscule reflections (Since their reflections, they constantly change which ties into the different incarnations thing) of their true form that exist on a significantly higher dimensional place. Heaven or some such.
The Darkseid we've seen that ranges from Herald level to Trans level is basically only a fraction as powerful as his true form. Course Darkseid still sucks so whateves.
