Went to see this tonight. positives? it looks stunning, it finally gives some info about the space jockey. Michael Fassbender is top drawer giving the best creepy artificial lifeform effort since HAL.
Negatives? It falls into the same trap that far too many big budget films are nowadays. Its sole purpose is to set up more movies. How hard is it to understand that if a movie written to be stand alone is good enough it can spawn a franchise naturally anyway. I mean for **** sake that exactly what Alien did in the 1st place. How hard can it be for the same director telling a story in the same fictional universe be to do it again?
There are also some glaringly gigantic plot holes. Some of which are obviously designed to set up for the next installment (which I'm willing to put money on will now never materialize at least not from Ridley Scott and if it does it'll be some shit director giving us another AvP shitfest that ruins a franchise that hasn't even got off the ground yet)
Some of the obvious plot twists seem like they were set up and then re-written half way through and discarded so end up not going anywhere.
I left the cinema feeling ripped off. How hard can it be to write an origins movie when what comes next is already set up? even for all their flaws the Star Wars prequel trilogy and X-men 1st class are better precursors to their later stories.
Beyond the admittedly amazing visuals I was not overly impressed and I wasn't overly hyped about it as I've seen some absolute shit from Ridley Scott over the last 15 years and now it seems he's completely lost the ability to make a genuinely great movie.

It was rewritten. So what did you feel to be plotholes....? (Spoilertag if necessary.) this was meant to be a two parter.
And Scott is meant to be doing both. (and Blade Runner 2)
This wasnt meant to be a prequel. Or even really a precursor, technically.

I do have a question for anyone that's seen it:Spoiler:
What was the meaning of the opening scene with the engineer at the waterfall? Does anybody know?
Spoiler:
He was on earth. By doing what he did it allowed life on earth. I heard a theory that I think is quite interesting. He drinks the same liquid that comes of of the vase things which David described as a bio weapon. The theory goes that the liquid changes the life form that's comes in contact with it into the worst possible outcome. As seen when the worms in the cave changed into the snake things. So the space jockeys are trying to kill humans to stop us killing each other / other races. In effect humans are the ultimate bio weapon.

Yeah, that bothered me too, considering I tend to have similar feelings towards films with Jaden more often than not.
I'm just hoping he's plain wrong this time, cos I've not seen a great SciFi since District 9.
I thought the movie was pretty decent. Some great visuals and cinematography. Very good acting as well. The movie thought it was much more thought provoking and deep than it actually was.
My biggest complaint is that I think the movie would have been stronger had they not shoehorned it into the alien mythology. For me there was no real reason for this other than because of the commercial aspect and to add to the hype. I found myself often too distracted by being curious how this would add up with the rest of the Alien movies, than actually sitting there enjoying what is otherwise a good movie. That whole aspect just felt unnecessary to me.
Don't get me wrong, it's not without its merits. It's easily the most unintrusive 3d used in a movie and doesn't have cheap eye hurting positive paralax as it uses mostly negative paralax which is much more convincing and effective. It looks stunning.
Spoiler:
As for the plot holes. I'll address a couple cos I'm posting from my phone so can't be bothered going into too much detail. The engineer that lost its head. you see the playback of 3 of them running into that room when the door closes on the last one yet there's no bodies of the other ones inside the room yet there isn't another way in or out. I presume they didn't leave again cos you'd have thought they'd have moved the body of the other one.2. The alien at the end looks like it's indicating that scene is the origin of the alien species that we know from previous films yet the room with the giant head clearly has a mural with a impression of a queen alien on it.
3. Why the need for the massively oversized face hugger near the end? What kind of prey does it usually lay its eggs in?
4. They clearly wrote in a story line of some Burke style under hand Weyland corporation then never followed up on it at all. Why did David infect holloway? was it simply a test to see what the goo would do to a human before weyland tried it himself? what was the point in weyland making a trip all the way there searching for immortality just to have him thrown across the room and killed? it seems they started writing some conspiracy aspect to the film and had no idea how to finish the story arc so instead of writing him out of it just killed him off instead.
I guess this is what happens when writers from lost are involved. They know how to start a story but have no idea what they want at the end and so you end up with unfinished sub par stories.

Good questions (particularly no.4). Wanna pull some answers outta my bottom after 3 viewings..
Please give em a mo, to see if they fit for ya.
Spoiler:
1. I guess they fled and were wiped out by the thing chasing them elsewhere.2. I thought it looked more like a warrior. There were other dna elements at play here.
The worms in the puddle also the human element crossed with alien black goo= output from Ropace.3.It seemed a genetic first, given that human DNA was there for the 1st time. The Alien Growth rate did seem to be acknowledged there. Maybe there were size relativism issues there. Who knows: Maybe the stone head was directly proportional to the originator..?
4. It was the 1st time we'd made it out there, right?
So it struck me (if that was the case) as a tester of what happens when the two get their jiggy owwwwn.
They did say in the movie that "the engineers/jockeys created us, and WTF made them change their minds and want to destroy us", well Weyland seemed to have not heard about the latter development. (Would his massive ego been sensitive to such a possiblility anyways?) In fact it was his demise and the attack on the others in that incident that was the 1st clear indicator that the engineers wanted us to go get fu**ed. Before that it was all "oooooh benevolent creators". The second that David's head was attempted to be shoved up Weyland's arsehole, the theory was officially negated for the 1st time.
I think any of Lindelhof/Spaights' failings were more actual spoken word shallowness in places. Not the plot per say. I remain a fan. 🙂
Loved Lost BTW.....commence the hating. 😛
