If Gaddafi were smart and wanted to stop the revolting, he should set up a rape-policy and let it be publicly known that any rebel captured in battle will be gang-raped repeatedly by his soldiers. It's not like the world doesn't already think he's an insane monster, so he's got nothing to lose by using such measures.I certainly wouldn't join the resistance.
He might as well just poison gas the occupied areas and have done with it then, if he´s going all or nothing.
The worrying thing with this conflict especially as the Western nations are considering arming the rebels is the Al Qaida presence which has been reported amongs the rebels.
It could end up the the usual sad situation that the weapons supplied will eventually be used against the countries who supplied them.
Jaden: hey, sorry I pretty much backed out of the debate here. I honestly had my MA thesis (a draft at least) due this week, and have been just hammering away at it. its done now, so hopefully I can dive back into this libya thing, though I imagine a lot has changed since our last arguments...
anyways, saw this today:
I'll say this, all in all, NATO seems to be doing a decent job, and even with some major losses for the pro-democracy rebels, it doesn't look like they are going to expand the mission in major ways, at least not yet
amazing how the president can violate his oath by declaring war on a country without going through congress like he is suppose to.The media is reporting it that Obozo's popularity is 50/50 since invading but as usual, they are lying, his popularity has dropped immensely since then and is only around 30%.

The US said that they had just signed off on sending CIA agents in to investigate the rebels (which probably means that CIA has been their for weeks) and a couple countries have made noise about arming the rebels. That said, they do seem dedicated to not putting NATO forces on the ground.

Interesting. Though it seems the world's eyes aren't quite so fixed on Libya anymore now that the initial fervor has quieted down the African Union is now taking a more active role.
Naturally Guadaffi (or however the **** its spelled) is going to accept any plan that guarantees to keep him in power. I think the best that could be hoped for from such a truce would be a partition of Libya along East and West lines, and even that's not an ideal outcome. I doubt the rebels are ever going to sit down with the man unless its to read out his charges before sending him to the gallows.

I'd imagine that CNN would love a story like this, I smell foul play.
Even if this is real then what do you expect from life under a guy who said, "Execution is the fate of anyone who forms a political party."
The anger, horrors, and atrocities committed by his regime can never be forgotten. These people have been subjected to so much pain and misery, it wouldn't surprise me to see this being taken out unreasonably.
Regardless, seems like an isolated incident. Most of the opposition forces are comprised of common people. Carpenters, construction workers, metal workers, y'know, the people who always are behind revolutions - the workers.
Originally posted by inimalistin principle, it may be equally morally reprehensible depending on one's views on the matter of "an eye for an eye". it is, however, both expected and understandable that the repression apparatus of a tyrannical regime be ruthlessly crushed during a revolution. this really does not say all that much about the revolutionary forces asd a whole or the future of country in their hands IMO.
so when Ghaddafi tortures and murders people, its a crime against humanity, when the rebels do it, it is excuseable because living under a murderous regieme makes them beyond moral reproach?
