Honestly, I don't see them being equals. Captain Marvel only has one legit win over Superman that I’ve seen. The “fight” in JLA/JSA: VIRTUE & VICE could be considered a win, but would be overly generous to give to Captain Marvel(since we don’t even see the fight beyond Captain Marvel sneak-attacking Superman, and it’s Power Girl and Doctor Fate we see holding Superman, not Captain Marvel). And the one win that Captain Marvel has without argument is because of a sucker-punch.
Superman on the other hand has shown the upper-hand against Captain Marvel even though Superman had been worn from fighting entire teams of powerful heroes, had some solar energy drained, Captain Marvel started the fight off with a sneak-attack, and Superman was effected by Kryptonite to an unknown degree. Even with all those factors, Superman still had the upper-hand in hand-to-hand combat and also caught Captain Marvel’s punch, showing superior strength. By comparison, when Captain Marvel caught Superman’s punch, he had to Zeus-amp, something that is only a temporary boost and weakens his other attributes.
Then Superman beat the absolute shit out of Captain Marvel during the ECLIPSO thing, when mind-controlled beat the shit out of Captain Marvel in a JSA issue(though this time Superman did the sucker punching), and Superman’s done better against Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter than Captain Marvel did.
And this is if we don’t count a potential future Superman was shown where he becomes the world’s dictator, after he’s already defeated a pretty impressive team, defeats a fresh Captain Marvel who said he’s going to stop Superman or die trying.
