Spoiler:
Am I right in assuming that this was Luthor and Superman's first real physical throwdown, presumably what lead him to being imprisoned when we last saw him in the H'el on Earth arc?
Yes you are.

A trickster, who will go to any length to survive even if it means sacrificing worlds to do it—leading to an Earth shattering confrontation between The Man of Steel and a Dark Lord.

Darkseid vs Superman written by Pak? Though "a Dark Lord" may not be him.

Brainiac was the first adversary Superman fought on Earth, but where did he come from? A lineage that spans the universe holds many secrets when we ask, “Who is Brainiac?”

Tony Bedard and Brainiac is always a good combination. Right, Galan? 🙂

BATMAN/SUPERMAN #3.1: DOOMSDAY

Batman is gone, and the inmates of Arkham Asylum are running wild in the streets! Bane is in Gotham City with one goal…to take it over no matter who he has to break!

Finally, Bane written by a competent writer in thew DCnU.

GREEN LANTERN: MONGUL #23.2
Written by JIM STARLIN
Art by HOWARD PORTER
3-D motion cover by BILLY TAN
On sale SEPTEMBER 11 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Deep in space, an unstoppable force is committing genocide on a galaxy-wide scale, and only the strongest will survive! Be warned, because nothing can prepare you for an all-new Warworld under the absolute rule of the tyrant called Mongul!

Mongul! By Jim Starlin. Thanos? The sad part is he's a GL villain, instead of a Superman one.

Also looking forward to, but not at the same level or unsure about (unknown writers or something else): Lobo, Secret Society, Black Adam, Reverse Flash, Lex Luthor, Bizarro, H'El, The Joker, The Riddler, Two-Face, Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins, Sinestro.

I've never heard so many people excited about Pak writing a character until now.

The story matters little, we want feats!

Judging by his history, I'm assuming it will be jam-packed with feats, but lack a good story.

Hopefully I'm wrong, though.

It's Pak. Unless he writes this like he wrote Hercules, I'm expecting a very bland, uninteresting book.

Doomsday by Pak? Interesting.

I full expect Doomsday to clash with Kal and destroy three planets as collateral damage.

If he basically does for Superman and Batman what he did for Hulk...lol

Wouldn't be surprised if people who loved him during that period of time suddenly find themselves not caring for his run on Batman/Superman and people who thought he was overrated or a fanboy writing his favorite character in the form of Hulk come to really love him now that he's dealing with the World's Finest.

I'd say it's a certainty tbh.

Question for anyone that would know: Has Spectre made much of an appearance in the books since the reboot? I'm putting him in my script for the writing tourney, but don't want to contradict the reboot too much.

Tynion has been writing a good Bane.

Afaik, Spectre has only appeared in Phantom Stranger #5 since the reboot. Nowadays, he is the personification of God's desire for justice-- not his wrath:

...So his role/purpose has changed a little, but not much.

He also appeared in Constantine, IIRC. #1 or 2.

Ah okay, thanks guys.

Is Phantom Stranger's ongoing any good?

I really enjoyed the character pre-Flashpoint, but I always felt that "less is more" when it came to his origins and motivations as a character.

Didn't they ruin his origin post reboot?

He's Judas, right?

I know it was implied as (one of several possible) origins pre-Flashpoint.

Can't wait to see Black Hand back in this!

GREEN LANTERN: BLACK HAND #23.3
Written by CHARLES SOULE
Art by ALBERTO PONTICELLI
3-D motion cover by BILLY TAN
On sale SEPTEMBER 18 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
In a world with no heroes, death lies behind every turn! Black Hand arrives to take advantage of Forever Evil, and he may be the most dangerous player yet! And when last we saw him, Black Hand was a pile of dust in the Dead Zone! How did he manage to return?

And interested in Relic's history Sinestro in GL 23!

GREEN LANTERN: SINESTRO #23.4
Written by MATT KINDT
Art by DALE EAGLESHAM
3-D motion cover by BILLY TAN
On sale SEPTEMBER 25 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Years ago, Sinestro used his Green Lantern ring to utterly dominate his home planet of Korugar, all in the name of "protecting" his people. It's the mistake that turned his name into a curse, and brought down the greatest Green Lantern of them all… but one never-before-seen moment from those dark days holds the key to his future!

And this Justice League Dark #23 looks cool. So I might pick it up, talking about Eclipso!

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #23.2: ECLIPSO
Written by DAN DIDIO
Art by PHILIP TAN
3-D motion cover by MIKEL JANIN
On sale SEPTEMBER 18 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
The powerful Black Diamond has been seen causing trouble in different corners of The New 52. Now you will learn its secrets as it lands in the hands of the host it was always meant for…and the full power of Eclipso is unleashed!

Yeah even pre-52 they implied Phantom Stranger was Judas, that's not new. Now they basically gave him a more direct hint that he is Judas

And they also kept it in the story that he was/could have been under other names as well even before he was Judas. Hope Phantom Stranger gets more sales, I don't want it to go! 😠

Swamp Things #23 doesn't have any info to it, so who knows what they planning for Arcane.

SWAMP THING #23.1: ARCANE

3-D motion cover by ??
On sale SEPTEMBER 18 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
*As of press time, DC declined to provide the full solicitation copy.

Is Phantom Stranger worth picking up? Never read it before and I kinda wanna read something more esoteric.

Well, Earth 2 was interesting. Captain Steel goes inside one of the Fire pits and finds...

Spoiler:
A Red Lantern

I've enjoyed it quite a bit thus far. I certainly wasn't happy with his origin at first, but it has started growing on me. If you enjoyed the Shadowpact series in pre-Flashpoint continuity(which I did immensely), then you'll like Phantom Stranger's current ongoing, me thinks.

Arcane/esoteric/obscura comics are my thing, though, so I might be a little biased. /shrug

Yeah, he's officially Judas these days.

But like you mentioned: the Judas thing was established as one of his possible origins over 25 years ago during Secret Origins-- it certainly isn't a 'new' concept by any means.
