I was forced to watch Avengers in 3D due to timings. So it will make a difference.

At these ridiculously high takings I'm guessing about 200-300mill diff can be accounted to the 3d thing.

thats why 3 D is simply a gimmick for studios to get an extra $3, $4, $5 extra from people..

last saturday I went back and saw The Avengers again and after it was over I asked my sister "Just why exactly was this in 3 D?" nothing was different when this is in 3 D... obviously I don't mind paying the extra dough but for some of these films I wait until a friend of mine gets them and then I only pay $5 .

Put the grosses of the two films side by side; Avengers with $1.45 billion, TDKR with $1 billion. If we said the 3D charge increased the average ticket by say, 25 % ($3 seems to be the common price hike) and we factored that into every single ticket sold for TDKR - it still falls short of Avengers by a couple hundred million.

Does anyone have the numnbers of how many tickets Avengers sold? That's the only way to compare.

No one's saying it would have surpassed Avengers. Just that it would likely be a lot closer.

Considering a movie like Avengers appeals much more widely to the family market it's clear TDKR has done really well. And should put to rest the idea that TDK only did so well due to Heath's passing.

TDKR is actually doing better in most of Europe compared to Avengers. While it's the opposite in Asia. TDKR is actually doing better than Spider-Man in China right now.

As of August 23rd:

Avengers has sold 76 million tickets. The Dark Knight sold 74 million. Batman (1989) sold 62 million. The Dark Knight Rises sold 50 million.

Can't wait to see how Wolverine does next year.

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight Rises has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX® theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. As of Sept. 3, 2012, the film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens domestically and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. These figures include box office receipts from China, which began playing the film on Aug. 27 in 75 IMAX theatres. The Dark Knight Rises represents the second IMAX DMR® film to cross this milestone, after Avatar.

"The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience" is still playing in IMAX theatres worldwide. For theatre locations and showtimes visit IMAX.com/Theatres.

While making the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on "The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience" —including the film's prologue — incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers.

Sequences filmed in 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

I'd like to see a full top 10 or 20 for all time tickets sold. No surprise that Gone With The Wind is still No. 1, just as it would be for adjusted box office. I'd just like to know if Star Wars is still No. 2.

I'm pretty sure Star Wars is way up there. If you adjust for inflation, it almost made 1.5B!

More than that. Adjusted for inflation, it's still ahead of Titanic & Avatar.

Yes! The Force still runs Strong! 😄

The Star Wars films have always been money makers. Oddly though TPM is the hightest grossing film of the series.

Due to inflation. If you account for Inflation then I believe all 3 of the Originals did better.

Anyway I liked TPM! After all it is the film that gave us Darth Maul 😄

Not sure if anyone brought this up but TDKR already beat TDK at the box office. I WISH that I could say "I told you so because Nolan is a great director" but I can't.

I remember when TDK first came out, a lot of people were saying the only reason it did well was because of Ledger's death. I never believed that for a second and always argued that the movie did well because it was a very good movie overall yet they would always shut me down by saying that it wouldn't have made even half the money it made if it weren't for Heath dying. Before this movie came out, I was really hoping for it to make over a billion at the box office and top TDK and this time, people couldn't argue that it was due to an actor's death thus I could have said the reason it did well was because the movie was very well done 🙂 and it would have also proved that TDK didn't make over $1 billion just because of Heath's death.

Then TDKR came out and I saw it, I disliked it and began to criticize it. Although it is an OK movie (not a great movie; just an OK movie), I think it has tons of flaws, plot holes, and things that just don't make sense/add up. I also think it is a terrible Batman adaptation and sequel to BB and TDK. I found it to be a huge letdown and very overrated. And now it topped TDK at the box office and all the Nolan fanboys (and no, not everyone that loves TDKR is a Nolan fanboy) are rubbing it in my face and are saying the movie is well done due to that. Funny how ironic life can be, eh? LOL

Domestic, it didn't defeat TDK. WW it did, though.
