No, sequel *not* confirmed. A sequel treatment- not even a script, let alone a confirmation- was requested. That's all.
That said, it is nearing the 300m total (international + domestic) mark without Japan or Brazil even out yet, so the talk at the moment is 'maybe sequel'. 400m, or twice the production budget, is generally when a sequel could be considered pretty safe.

Apparently a kiss ending was shot, but Del Toro thought it just didn't work.
Which I think was a good call- romance is not mandatory in an action flick! The two mains have a very close relationship that doesn't need romance to be strong.
